Cavan v Armagh SFC

Folks

A good day for Cavan people yesterday

The minors won a game which a couple of years ago they would have come out the wrong side of the result.

The seniors lost the mid field battle but you had to be impressed by the manner in which:

Martin Dunne responded to a couple of missed frees in the first half and

The team responded to the Armagh goal

Moment of the day had to be Fordies reaction when Keatings point was waved wide, it was the score of the day.

Lets take it a game at a time, Fermanagh next at our home away from home.

I presume the day of the "Petition" to reinstate players onto the senior panel is over. To get onto this panel you have to work hard and show up well in club games.

Cavan management done the homework and it paid off well. Playing Alan Clarke in front of Jamie Clarke and that with Mc Loughlin took Clarke outa the game. Delighted to see lads comin on of the bench especially Jack Brady. Looking at that team and subs yesterday Hyland is developing a big squad and it will stand to us as this competition progresses provided he takes every chance to keep on developing players. Armagh were poor and it will take a different setup to beat Fermanagh but yesterday will have given great confidence .

A great win yesterday and great performance. Perhaps should have won by more even. All round was very good and hard to single out individuals. Thought Martin Reilly done very well when introduced picking up vital dirty ball. Mackey maybe should have being taken of earlier as he was out on his feet. Two debutants played very well and players singled out for abuse and questioned earlier in week done very well. Ronan Flanagan being one who dictated a lot of the play and his pass for the goal was a beaut. Fergal Flanagan also proved doubters wrong with a dominant period midway through second half. One major issue was midfield where we were cleaned. Looking ahead a new game plan is needed for Fermanagh. As we seen in league game it will be a battle of attrition with pulling and dragging being the order of the day. No way would they have allowed that goal with a foul being committed earlier in the move. But I said earlier in year progress is being seen and I think Terry deserves credit for this. Lads considered not good enough for the panel a year ago are playing really well and a panel is being created where positions have to be fought for.

Great win yesterday. Solid team performance.
Armagh are poor.
Imagine if we had to break even in midfield.
Fermanagh will be a step up, they won't be as naïve as Armagh, Peter Canavan is a shrewd operator. Dunne will be double marked or a sweeper in front.
Good to get a championship game & victory under the belts.
Will stand to us hopefully, great chance of a semi final berth.
Did we score 1-12 or so from yester ??
Keep the heads down & work hard.
Lads will be fairly pushin now in training for the next few weeks, should bring good competition.

I've got some humble pie slices here for a few boys when ever they are man enough to come on and admit they are ashamed of their comments in the weaks leading up to this match. You know who you are!

Well done to all involved in a very well organised, fit and motivated panel.

I'll have a slice please fredflint in relation to Gilsenan. He did very well yesterday, kick outs were good and was confident under the high ball. Can only help his confidence. Great start, lets build on it.

There were a few debuts for some u16 players who were late calls into the minors ,who had not played a minor game all year, to my knowledge, and they looked lost yesterday as they didnt seem to know what they were supposed to be doing. Hopefullly next game they will settle in next time.

Great to see us do a double and have another opportunity to play championship football, and 4 weeks will give us ample opportunity to sort out any problems. Looking forward to Fermanagh game.

As the scoreboad after the game read " The Future is Blue"

Well done to Cavan yesterday. I fancy you to beat Fermanagh and if that happens then who knows. Young players thrive on confidence and if you get two wins on the trot that could be the catalyst for a great season. I would love to see Cavan do well in Ulster again and if we go out of Ulster early I'll be backing you lads all the way!!

Well done yesterday, I hate the way the media claim Armagh were poor, yesterday was about Cavan being good. If you's can beat Fermanagh, then who knows. A long way off but perhaps a Donegal/Cavan final

Congrats to Terry and the lads on a great display. Just proves what a lot of hard work and effort allied to an awful lot of skill can bring you. The work ethic was fantastic and a lot of people who had their doubts about the make - up of the team got their answer. For example Feargal Flanagan did so much work and won so much dirty ball , it was really uplifting. The backs were brilliant as a whole and with Killian Brady , Mackey and Feargal dropping back it was hard to penetrate our back line.
If there is one concern going forward it has to be midfield and our failure to win high ball. Givney even though he played a great game breaking forward never inspired confidence under the high ball and Damian Reilly is simply not a mid fielder. I personally would now use Killian Clarke at midfield and switch Damian back a wing back. Our lack of scoring spread was probaly due to our 2 man full forward line but I think we need more score getters like Jack Brady in there.
But at the same time it was a famous win with a squad so young. Well done to everyone.

Great result for Cavan yesterday. First the positives:

Goalkeeper: Justified his selection ahead of Reilly. Was commanding under any high ball which is crucial.
Defence: Worked well as a unit. Kept Clarke scoreless which was quite an achievement. Always a man available when carrying the ball out of defence. Impressed with mc enroe and particularly r flanagan who's distribution was excellent, highlighted by the pass for the goal.
Forwards: Worked hard and stuck to the gameplan of leaving the 2 men inside. Dunne and keating were unmarkable and kicked some fine scores. Mackey and m reilly were excellent at carrying the ball. Distribution was excellent aswell.

Now the negatives:
Midfield: Really struggled to win ball and was the only area which armagh dominated. Everyone knows Givney is our only player to field ball so it leaves it very easy for the opposition to surround him for our kickouts. We really need another big midfielder here as damien reilly doesnt have the size although he did work hard. I believe if we had Gearoid yesterday we could have won by 10+.
Cynical fouling: I know we're not alone here but we committed numerous cynical fouls yesterday for which we lost Givney. With the black card been introduced next year its a bit concerning that we committed numerous cynical fouls.
Selfishness: Although not a big problem I thought there were a few instances where the ball should've been played to the man in thest positon instead of shooting. On another dsy that could've cost us dearly.

With the way the draw has fallen we may never have as good a chance of reaching an ulster final. What a huge lift that would give to the county. We certainly dont need to fear fermanagh, monaghan, or antrim.

For the first time in a long time i actually have a good feeling about a Cavan team, there is a good balance to it. I hope they continue to train hard and don't underestimate Fermanagh because they will be a far bigger test.

well done. watched the game on the tv yesterday. played lovely football throughout. very impressed with your work rate. honestly thought keating was your best player on the field. i know dunne scored 9 points but the running of keating to make space for the delivery was breath taking. Armagh if they tried could not have played into your hands any better leaving all that space for dunne and keating to win the ball. they still had to do damage when they got it and boy did they do that. Well done and a great chance now to get to an Ulster final

Honestly Armagh were terrible. If they d have met Cavan later on in the competition we d hammer them. Our nervy start flattered the scoreline.

I think the next day will be alot tighter & certainly can t miss 45 s & frees.

Midfield was very hard to analize i think Cavans management actually gambled on this one. They were happy to let Armagh win the Lions share as long as Gibney added to our attack.Which he certainly did. He setup an awful lot..Damien Reilly did well also.

Our half backs will probably have to work harder next day & attack more as the half forward line were spent after 50 minutes..Brilliant goal from Mackey.

Biggest concern next day will be scores .. Can Martin Dunne repeat tha half of that feat. Take him out & we scored 1.06 a point from a half back & midfield . I d love to see half forwards pushing for scores but their jobs are specialised roles i suppose!

Defencively we snuffed out lots but Maurice Deegan was miserly with frees. Armagh could question some of our tackling. We shiped 1.11 & Stefan Forker & Jamie Clarke were bad.

All in all we ll beat Fermanagh.

Derry/Cavan Final???

Watched the game on T.V yesterday and must say i was surprised by Cavan and some of their players. Going on what i've read here both Flanagans are average players yet both were of a high standard yesterday,Ronan did some beautiful long footpasses in the first half which created scores and Fergal won posession countless times. Eugene Keating to my eyes was the man of the match and looked a very talented footballer as is young Dunne and Cian Mackey's pretty good also, your midfield was quite abysmal aerially though which is dangerous when up against the better sides,i know for 1 thing our boys wouldn't be too worried about coming up against gibney and reilly. The reilly lad that came on that's very left footed looks a good footballer too,is he carrying an injury?Did he play soccer at a professional level at 1 stage?
All in all i think Cavan and Fermanagh will have a tight game but i would fancy our chances against either if we beat Antrim as we have some high standard long range point scorers Finlay/Mc Manus/Tommy which would be helpful against your defence as long as Dick doesn't shoot lol

Ill hold my hand up and admit(gladly) I had it wrong. I never named any players in particular, but I thought the team was wrong, and the players I doubted proved very worthy on the day. Hyland got his tactics spot on, although even he must have been puzzled by grimley not protecting his FB line who got murdered. 1-15 they all did well and if anything derseved to win by more. Without trying to dampen the humor, you must admit, this is the worst Armagh team we have seen in 3 generations. Killian Clarke really is a star in the making in my book. On another note, what a fantastic minor game. Guts galore from the blues and in captain Tom Hayes they have a real leader, his performance was the best by a minor since villain Sheridan that I've seen.

Martin Reilly was with Burnley for 2 years. Released when he was 19. Didn't make the first team Squad. Played under age soccer with Ireland, U-17,U-19.
Returned and played with Longford Town for a season after being released by Burnley. Cian Mackey was offered a professional contract by Cork City in 2007, but turned it down.

Martin Dunne couldn't make the U-21 team in 2010, and left the panel before the Championship. He has come on a lot in recent years.

Smallballs it would be unfair to say the Flanagans are average players. Fergal has three Ulster Under 21 medals while Ronan has played for Ulster and won a couple of Sigersons with DCU. Just negative neysayers in Cavan always wanting to put lads down.

Would have to agree as Keating was brilliant but congrats on Cavan getting 5 lads on the Team of the week. Well done to all the lads. Now go on and bring further pride back to the old County.
