Division Two 2012

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I wasnt at the match so can only go by what i've heard/read but that coupled with my own experience watching both Mountnugent and Denn against my own club, I can easily imagine how this row may have broke out. Anyway, the whole lot is all too common in gaa and it's difficult to see how to mend it. It will continue to happen for as long as the 'win at all costs' attitude prevails. Hopefully Martin will make a speedy recovery and who knows, maybe the high profile nature of the incident will force the county board to make a serious effort to clean up the game. Here's hoping!

Just intrested in Shannon Geals league .it looks like they have pulled out.if this is true doesn't that mean they drop two division instead of just one meaning they will end up in div 4

Pity to see the recession having an impact on a club like Shannon Gaels especially as they have been there or thereabouts as contenders for the Junior Championship over the past 6/7 years. And capaple of producing talented young players such as Nevin O Donnell, the two O Haras, McLoughlin and Enda McHugh

If they have enough to play but the players aren't interested then I have no sympathy for them. I'm sure Tom Reilly will think of something, maybe give them a lock of medals.

wow "Bananas", that is a very flippant point of view. Many small clubs are struggling and if you are a genuine football person you should be worried about these developments. I have great sympathy for any club who are loosing young men, not just from a football point of view, but also from a community point of view. It impacts greatly on the wider community. Many clubs are struggling to field underage teams and are forced to amalgamate to ensure their young player can play football, in the hope that they will be around in a few years time to line out for their senior team. Mountnugent, Maghera and Munter Connaught cannot field teams of their own at u16 or minor. Cavan Gaeals are struggling for numbers at u16 level. Other sports are attracting them at a young level, so we must norish and take care of our youth. Emmigration is the big curse facing clubs in all areas and all sizes. We cannot stop or blame these young men who are looking for a better life.
So I ask you,How would you feel if it was your own club who were struggling? How would you feel if you lost vast numbers from your team and community? How would you feel if your club could not field a team?
Think before you make off the cuff remarks. You are obviously lucky to be a member of a club who are "flush" with players, but have a little sympathy for those clubs who are not as fortunate as yours. The future of County football is affected by club football, and if we are loosing players and possibly clubs, then I fear for the future.

Perhaps I was a bit harsh but nevertheless. It has been stated twice or 3 times on this site and others that Shannon Gaels have got enough players to play. They did not lose 35 players to emigration like I read in the paper a few months ago. Shannon Gaels had more players on the county u21 team this year than any other club and they were also represented on the county minor team as well. Now I know for a fact that they are low on numbers and have been for quite some time but I also know that they have more than enough to play the games. If they don't have enough to field 2 teams fair enough, but they have 20 odd senior players, of this I am sure.

My club is not ''flush'' with players as you put it and we struggle to field our second team with several of our senior players sticking about after the senior match to make up the numbers, and fair play to them. As well as this we use a lot of 17 and 18 year olds because they are willing to play and make themselves available . I've heard from two different sources that a young Shannon Gaels player suffered a bad injury at the start of the year and this discouraged other young players from playing. If this is the case then their problem is not emigration, it is something else.

It's the same old story as it is with amalgamations. Teams would have enough if they used their younger players but intentionally try to avoid using players from the previous age bracket and then whinge about not having enough. Nonsense. Cavan gaels u16 have enough to field a team, they just aren't good enough for division 1 and so idiotic excuses like that come out. Does any club have 20 odd players available for every game at every age group? I doubt it. You can't expect teams to have 15 starting and 10 to choose from on the bench. But the teams that want to get on with it do so with 17/18 players and the teams that don't want to get on with it disregard their younger players when counting players and then say they don't have enough.

It's sad to see a club in this position but I would like to see them treated the same way as any other team would be if they were in the same situation.

These are the facts regarding Shannon Gaels.

A work colleague of mine is involved with Shannon Gaels. According to him they have lost 14 players from last year. Only 3 of their starting champ team from 2011 remain. If this is true then that is a serious loss to any club never mind a junior club. According to him young OHara and O donnnell are also heading stateside within next week or so. They have only one player based at home, have 18 students (6 leaving certs) from a panel of 20 players. Also one of their leaving cert lads got a serious concussion early on in the year which has resulted in him not sitting leaving cert this year. This had a huge effect on other students and as a result they have not been able to field teams recently.

It is a pity that a club like this who have produced some really good under age players for Cavan recently find themselves in this situation. Unfortunately the recession has had a major impact on the Blacklion area but I hope that they can get things together for the Summer. I think amalgamations will be a fact of life for small clubs like the Gaels in the future.

Cavanforsam... Do you think if I also re-post what I said more people will take notice? We heard you the first time. And you can't say your posts are factual either.

What happens if the gaels 2nd team goes up to div 1 ? does this mean that the gaels have two teams in next year's senior championship ?
