New Antrim hurling boss Davy Fitzgerald has suffered a blow with the news that Conor McCann has retired from inter-county hurling.

The Kickhams Creggan clubman was a mainstay of the Antrim senior team for 14 years, during which he won the Joe McDonagh Cup twice (once as captain) and was also Joe McDonagh Cup Player of the Year in 2020.

McCann first came to prominence as a member of the Antrim U21 team that shocked Wexford to reach the 2013 All-Ireland final, only to lose heavily to Clare in the final.

He was a player rep for the GPA who said in a statement: "Conor has been a long time advocate for his fellow players as a GPA squad rep in Antrim. We wish you the best for the future Conor and thank you for all you have done for hurling and for players."
