Champions Shelmaliers got their 2021 Wexford SHC campaign off to a winning start with a hard-earned 2-16 to 1-18 victory over Cloughbawn on Saturday afternoon.
Goals in either half from Paul Hearne and Sean Keane Carroll helped the Shels past the Clonroche side at Chadwicks Wexford Park.
Hearne's goal gave the holders a bit of breathing space at the break (1-10 to 0-6), however, Cloughbawn produced a strong, late comeback that just fell short.
In the later throw-in, Wexford captain Lee Chin was to the fore as Faythe Harriers defeated Oulart-The Ballagh 2-17 to 2-13.
Elsewhere, on Friday evening, Glynn-Barntown sent out an early warning with their 0-19 to 0-13 dispatching of St Martin's.
The action continues at the county grounds on Sunday as Crossabeg-Ballymurn cross swords with St Anne's (throw-in 6pm) before Naomh Eanna and Rapparees meet at 2.
