Colm O’Rourke wants to remain in charge of the Meath footballers for at least another three years.

Despite bowing out of the All-Ireland SFC race after three straight defeats in the round-robin series, the Royal County legend is convinced things will improve and is eager to oversee the rebuild. O’Rourke’s position will be reviewed in the coming weeks after he completed two of an initial three-year term at the helm.

“I think it's going to take several years to build a team here, so I think it might take five years. So I think I'll go to the county board and ask them to give me five years as a minimum thing,” he told reporters after yesterday’s loss to Monaghan.

“Because I think it's going to take certainly two or three years. We will be better next year, we'll be in contention for promotion from the second division (of the Allianz League) and then by the following year, we'll be in contention with all the big teams so it's a job of work.

“I'd be happy to stay with them, they're a great group of fellas, they're very committed and very dedicated. All they need is time and patience and kindness. I'm confident in them because they have a huge commitment.”
