There was remarkable late drama in this afternoon’s All-Ireland minor hurling championship final as a goal at the death saw Tipperary snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and break Offaly hearts.

It finished 1-17 to 1-16 at a packed out Nowlan Park, where Paddy McCormack’s flicked goal in the fifth minute of injury-time proved the difference between the sides as Tipp tied Kilkenny for the most Irish Press Cup triumphs with their 21st.

After an even opening 25 minutes, it was Offaly that began to pull clear in this decider and led by 0-10 to 0-7 when Leigh Kavanagh coolly slotted home their goal on the eve of half-time.

Kavanagh’s strike hand marked an unanswered 1-4 for the Faithful lads before their opponents came out for the second-half and sailed over the first three points via Joe Egan and Damien Corbett (1 free and 1 ‘65’).

Donal Shirley and Adam Screeney sent over points that looked to have weathered that storm for Offaly and they’d lead by five heading into a sensational closing 10 minutes in Kilkenny.

Corbett got his marking orders for chucking his hurl at Cathal Robinson and striking him in the head as the Offaly attacker was on route towards goal and the resultant free was lashed over by Screeney for a six-point advantage.

Tipp never threw in the towel though and points from Sam O’Farrell, McCormack and Darragh McCarthy still left them with a chance in injury-time and they’d take it in sensational fashion right at the death through McCormack.
