There was no shortage of goals in the Connacht minor football championship at Dr Hyde Park this evening as Roscommon defeated Mayo 4-13 to 2-12 in an entertaining tussle.
The Rossies, perhaps buoyed by the exploits of their U20 footballers' Connacht final win over the same opposition on Wednesday night, effectively sealed the win in the first-half when a whirlwind 18-minute spell saw them score four goals.
Having trailed by 0-4 to 0-2, Ryan Conlon converted a penalty before further majors from Shane McGinley and captain Colm Neary powered the hosts into a 3-5 to 0-5 lead after 25 minutes.
Mayo were awarded a penalty of their own, which they scored after a rebound but the ball was then worked up their field for Neary to net his second and that put Enda Nugent's charges 4-6 to 1-8 clear at half-time.
A second Mayo goal brought the margin down to five with 15 minutes remaining but they were unable to make any further inroads as Roscommon advance to a semi-final clash against Galway on July 31.
