Replying To seadog54:  "Right or wrong this seems to be the plan, players wanted change ( hence the two lads stepping down) some would have you believe players will not play under COR, not so. Would be ok with him remaining as manager for the sake of continunity, however need's a beefed up coaching ticket. May have left it too late but as I said many counties still to finalise their management group. Don't be surprised if this drag's on a bit longer than the 27th."
'Some would have you believe players will not play under COR, not so'.

Ask Jack Flynn, Conor McGill and Diarmuid Moriarty why they are not playing football for Meath.

There's a major difference between someone like McGeeney, who was slowly but surely building and had the backing of the players, versus O'Rourke, who over 2 years, has not made any inroads and has by all accounts lost the backing of the players and selectors/coaches. The notion that things will improve with time under O'Rourke is nonsense. In my 20 years or so watching Meath, some of the worst performances have come under his watch. Crucially, it was very evident to me particularly over this year that the players' hearts weren't in it. When you've lost the faith of your players, there is simply no return. I'm not sure why this decision has been prolonged because it seems like an incredibly straightforward one to make.

If you say so. Sure there are no problems everything is fine and dandy give him another 5 years and see how many coaches and selectors he goes through.

Back in 1985 Meath got hammered out the gate by Laois in a Leinster semi final , Sean Boylan was going to walk away from the Meath set up , but 5 weeks later senior players like Mick Lyon's , Joe Cassells , Liam Hayes , Padraig Lyon's and Colm O'Rourke went to Sean Boylans house to convince him to stay , that was players believing there manger , never mind fans or county board what they think , if your players believing you that all that matters , because they are the people who know if you are good or not.

All very experienced and self motivated group of men, on field leaders,( something Meath really lack at present) where football played a huge part in their lives. Does that still apply in the era of instant gratification ? David Beggy gave a great interview to Tomas O Se a few week's back looking at that time, well worth a listen, both eye opening and funny. Link available in Sam Maguire posts. I don't believe COR has lost the player's and would hope he would have stood aside if so, what would be the point of staying on
Maybe I'm in line for a rude awakening but will wait to be convinced.. Looking backwards to SBs time proves nothing, remember Sean is still involved and no doubt he would have a word with Colm if players wanted him gone.

They were quite high calibre men we are talking about and people keep going on about players not happy etc. I think the players also need to take quite alot of blame for the standard of displays the past year with many poor individual performances including poor performances from senior players. To keep saying the players were unhappy and want change is a little hard to fathom. Change could mean big changes in the squad for many so they should be careful what they wish for.

Big changes in the squad? Do we have a back up squad or a whole host of young men ready to go behind the current squad ? And don't mention the 20s, way too young. A good few of the stars off that can't get a start with their club 1st team, Armstrong and the likes. What we have now is it, plus developing young lads, so there simply won't be any changes to the squad.

Interesting line in Christy O'Connor's piece on Harte going to Offaly in the Sunday Times this morning "three other counties were pursuing Harte, two of whom in Leinster are higher ranked than Offaly".
Given Dublin don't need him, Louth won't want him and Kildare have their coaching ticket confirmed, it's hard to read that as anything other that Meath being one of the counties. I don't necessarily think a 70 year old manager would be the right appointment, but it changes the context of this management review.

Back up squad? Well perhaps you need to know there are many clubs in Meath, over 50 in fact who all have good players. Many of these clubs have up to four adult teams so I guess across the whole county I'm sure there are many decent players not involved in current county set up while the players involved last year should know that certainly last year's performances have not given many the right to own a shirt. I think you are giving existing panel a little too much credit. Armstrong is playing adult football for first even time. I think he is still 18. He is a super prospect. If anything O'Rourke should have drafted in a few mid year. Way too young? Tyrone didn't think so, they took in five. Jim Mcguinness had a few in from start also.

I've never understood why Meath always protect u21 players and never just have them skip our usual half hearted, pathetic u21 setups.

Loads of players, especially in Ulster, have just gone straight to senior setups a year or two after minor. We insist on them remaining with u21s for some bizarre reason, even when clearly better than what's on our senior team (not too difficult recently tbf). Maybe that's why players on so many of our promising minor teams never progress to become decent senior players.

There are great opportunities for a good management team who are able to devote a big effort to do tremendously well. The outgoing manager never had the capacity to test properly the potential players . Indeed the stronger bigger clubs on the east side were largely ignored, or were not interested in playing for a setup rooted in the distant past. If the appointment goes well it could be a Leinster next year

What a waste of 10 weeks that was. Another fine mess the county board have made for themselves. O'Rourke still not taking any responsibility right to the very end. Sitting potential new selectors club commitments as a reason for not being able to declare his new backroom team is a lame excuse in my opinion. He's had 10 weeks to get a team together, more than enough time. Offaly got a top class manager and coach in the space of 5 days.

You may not believe he lost the players, but he did. Talk to some of the lads in there, like I have done, and they will tell you just how the feedback was.
Irrelevant now as I see he has stepped down, just disappointing it took this long and I fear precious time wasted.

COR gone. Personally, I'm m happy. Hopefully the county board don't make a mess of the appointing his successor. But no doubt they will

Make that 3 now. An odd decision if what's in the media is true. Surely a man of Colm's standing should be afforded whatever time needed to get a management team in place so it's hard to know what the truth is but I'd be surprised if wasn't true.
