Meath V Wexford

We are 1/7 with bookies for this one and the handicap is ➖ 6. Which is about right imo. Team pretty much same as last time. Only change I'd make is I'd have Harry as gk as I feel they have better goal takers than most teams. But it's a marginal call and I wouldn't be bothered if same 15 starts

A 6 point spread by the bookies sounds about right. 4pm throw in, Saturday evening in Navan, hopefully the weather is good and there's a good crowd and buzz around the place.

With regard to the team, I think Caulfield struggled against Down and I wouldn't start him against Wexford. I'd like to see Flynn or McGowan in from the start in the half forward line.

6 pt spread. Where is this coming from? Wexford scored 1-22 from play last week. When did we score anything close to that? Are Meath capable of beating any team in the country by more than 6 pts at the moment?

Giving a washout Saturday which make me nervous, we don't seem to perform in bad weather.

Yeah in fairness I'd agree with that. McGowan for Caulfield

It's supposed to have been lashing all week if you were to listen to them last Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

While I take it we're not great at the minute, we put up 1-19 and 3-17 in 2 of our last 3 games - and I recall both of them being more than 6 point wins. Any more pointless rhetorics?

What difference does points scored as long as it's more than the opposition on the day even if not playing well. Username irony alert.

Hopefully weather is wrong. They've been out most of the week let's Hope Saturday is the same. I've a few euros on us to cover the handicap so hopefully

Looked up Meath weather just now and they are giving heavy rain and thunderstorms between 3 pm and 5pm. Maybe it'll miss the Navan area although I doubt it.

This was against the 2nd lowest ranked team in the country and another team who finished bottom of division 3 and relegated to div 4 with a single pt in league. Granted Wexford are div 4 also but they beat the team we failed to beat in Leinster while scoring 1-22 in the process. Why so touchy in this subject?

You obviously didn't scroll up to previous messages and get the context. Perhaps you may be better off switching over to your beloved Mayo page and pass on these winning mentality messages giving the many hard luck stories and sympathy seeking your county supporters have looked for in the past during the numerous near misses for All-Ireland glory!

Not sure if this was asked already but do we play the winners of limerick and laois or is it another draw? Meath by 10 plus this weekend for me!

I saw your messages and your context. I live in Meath, member of a club here, two daughters playing football, so have an interest. On the day, no matter what the gap in standards thought between Meath and Wexford each will be happy with a one point win and a semi final spot. Neither team will be any better off in the semi final if they win by 1 or 6 tomorrow. Anything to improve before semi should be sorted out in training.

The Mayo thréad is too quiet and I've an interest in learning about Meath club and county GAA. We weren't good enough to win any of those All Irelands. No near misses, losing by a point or 10 points is still not winning. Treating a 1 point defeat as a moral victory is absolute nonsense and gets us nowhere. Scoreboard is what counts. We could reach and lose 50 finals because we don't try to find out why we make bad decisions in pressure games that we don't make in earlier rounds. Sure there's plenty of Mayo people still think we were robbed in '96 and it' s the 'one that got away'. Never contemplating what a great team that Boylan had then, absolutely refused to give in. I think in Mayo we're still living in the past not learning from it. You can't criticise management or players before a game but sure adding to the long list of excuses and scapegoats isn't accepted it's encouraged. Is it any wonder we still lose games?!!!

Anyways, best of luck tomorrow. Ye can beat Wexford but not by going into the game thinking ye should beat them.

I think it's you that's getting touchy about it. Every commentator, journalist and bookie in Ireland has Meath as favourites this weekend, but you think it's all nonsense, based solely on the fact Wexford scored 1-22 in their last game.

Every man and his dog knows that Meath should be favourites at home in Navan against a div. 4 team. The point is that the bookies has thinks it will be a margin of 6 pts or greater against the team that beat the team we couldn't in this years championship. I don't know if there is as much evidence or confidence that it will be as easy as everyone thinks. I hope it is mind you!

You hit the nail squarely on the head regards Mayo. I would add that their underdog mentality, even verging on inferiority complex has contributed to now what it is probably the greatest hoo-doo in Irish sport.

For me, it has always seemed like Mayo supporters AND footballers are happy (deep down) with being top dog in Connacht (getting one over Galway and the Rossies), and one or two big games after that. Theyve always had good players, but good players who were overhyped and again, who deep down were pleased with having their names in the news and media etc. When it came right down to it, they just hadnt the mental approach. They have always been in the wrong frame of mind. There is always next year, and sure we gave it a lash. And the supporters keep coming back. To me it is obvious what the issue is, and it crystallised a few years back in the final vs. Tyrone. That was a total embarrassment by Mayo, esp after beating Dublin in the semi. But look, if that mindset can change and evolve and newer generations of players come in with a new approach, Mayo will absolutely win many All-Irelands, and I hope they do!

Here's hoping Meath do the job on Wexford.

Looking at very recent form, we beat Tipperary by 11 points and Waterford by 9 points, both division 4 teams at the same level as Wexford. And put up big scores in doing so, not that it matters when it comes to the margin of victory.

Anyway, to the game itself. I like the look of the team named. There's usually 1-2 changes but I hope not, I think this 15 is our best selection on form. Best of luck to the lads. A win would be another step on the long road to recovery.
