Well yes, you'd have to imagine any Kerry team would be strong given that there's only 8 senior clubs, so they'd be very strong at Intermediate or Junior. That's before you take David Clifford into account. But as you said, good run by Castletown. Probably the least fancied off all the Meath champions in Leinster, and put up good performances on the road. hyperache (Meath) - Posts: 251 - 08/12/2022 14:14:11 2449871 Link 1 |

That's a very disappointing result for Trim. Did the hardest part and beat the Kilkenny champions and still couldn't get over the line. Ratoath Royal (Meath) - Posts: 1374 - 10/12/2022 14:48:19 2450044 Link 14 |
Yeah Ratoath done so well vs the downs

What an weirdly childish and bitter response. Like most Meath fans, I support all Meath teams in Leinster. You're obviously one of the exceptions.

Fair play Ratoath Royal, yes you are a great supporter of all Meath teams on here. Getting through to win a provincial is so difficult - so many things have to go you way. A long season caught up with Trim yesterday and they came up against a team they were quite evenly matched with. The game being switched to Bray's home ground certainly didn't help and losing three of their starting backs to injury and a sending off added to the difficulties. Brays defence did a good job of snuffing out Trim's danger men and deserved their win but it could have gone the other way on another day. stillaroyal (Meath) - Posts: 225 - 11/12/2022 11:53:26 2450102 Link 1 |
Wasn't Trim's Day. Don't know if they had any say in the match being changed. Personally think they should have waited to have it in aughrim or somewhere else. Surprised no-one on either team was seriously hurt as some of the pulls and hits going on with the referee not caring was shockin. Once a ruck formed anything was allowed. toher at one point was shouldered right down his chest and put to his knees and ref played on. Higgins was lucky not to have been given a second yellow earlier in the match however and his sending off ultimately cost them the match as the spare man killed them as bray just played a sweeper for rest of the game. Bray were standard enough but the Trim forwards struggled massively and the cole brothers had a big off day so every ball came straight back out. Still it should be a lesson for a relatively young team but could see a few of the older lads stepping away now. Irish_downunder (Meath) - Posts: 640 - 12/12/2022 10:28:41 2450160 Link 1 |

I still think it's more important to keep 15 on the field especially in heavy conditions.

And also for anyone who saw the game it seemed to be simply an off day for too many of the trim lads. Tough to keep momentum going after fantastic displays since the semi final of the Meath championship.

Castletown on the road again Saturday in the All Ireland semi final against Fossa in Portlaoise. Will be a big ask lining up against the Clifford's! Bookies don't give them much of a chance but hopefully they can keep flying the Meath flag in the club championship! Best of luck to them boeder (Meath) - Posts: 59 - 03/01/2023 13:38:54 2450955 Link 2 |
Hard luck to Castletown yesterday, was always going to be a huge ask to beat a Kerry team who boast the best player in the country, and his brother who isn't too far behind. hyperache (Meath) - Posts: 251 - 08/01/2023 12:45:39 2451504 Link 0 |
Fair play to Castletown on a good campaign. Is there anybody on the team who should be on Meath squads. I would imagine McConnell and Smith with the 20's. Maybe Price with the seniors?

I would say the bulk of Castletow's good players are the younger lads, who've all been involved with Meath teams at underage level, so you'd imagine they will progress through the ranks. Might be a bit soon for Killian Smyth or Rian McConnell, I think the latter is only about 18, and he needs a bit of physical development. Price is a good half back, and certainly wouldn't hurt having him involved with the senior panel for the experience anyway, see what development can happen. Other than that, maybe the full back Evan Hoey is the only one I could think of. He's probably a bit older though, 24ish, but did a very reasonable Job on David Clifford yesterday. I did hear a rumour he was called up by COR and will join them after the club's campaign finished, so not sure if there's any truth in that, but he seems quite a decent defender. hyperache (Meath) - Posts: 251 - 08/01/2023 16:02:40 2451521 Link 0 |
Hard luck Castletown. It was always going to be a mammoth task coming up against Fossa (or indeed any Kerry junior team). Ratoath Royal (Meath) - Posts: 1374 - 09/01/2023 12:35:22 2451689 Link 14 |
Bit of a joke hearing a delegate giving out about Kerry having only 8 senior clubs when few years back he was on about Meath reducing from 18 to 16 senior and from 20 to 16 intermediate clubs… Brownepat (Meath) - Posts: 532 - 11/01/2023 09:37:06 2451982 Link 0 |
And when Dublin have 32 senior teams. We would be well advised being quiet on it as the current situation suits us too. Nothing stopping us moving to 8 senior clubs too if we wanted to

I wonder if the point he was trying to make was that the standard of Kerry Intermediate and Junior teams would be higher because they had less Senior teams? Maybe not! If we changed Meath to 8 Senior teams - so 8 teams drop down from Senior to Inter and then 8 teams drop down from Inter to Junior you would have to think that whichever teams won Intermediate or Junior would be better placed to win Leinster and All Ireland club?
