Would agree on most of this and certainly regarding the management, I think they need to retained. It is Mc Carthys first time to manage at this level and im sure its been a learning curve for him too. Constant changing of mangers hasnt done anything for us over the years. Game intelligence is something that needs to be developed for U-20 level and too often over the last few years we are on here complaining about the concession of early and soft goals and also the lack of a kick out strategy at U-20 level. Individually we had just as much if not more talent than Dublin and thats where the real shame is, we simply did not reach anywhere near our potential for the last good few years. You said we couldn't get the ball to him...but also said we were cleaned out at midfleld...he was part of that midfield clearing out? ...

We were from kick outs as we hadn't enough men around for breaking ball sorry. When I said we couldn't get him the ball I meant when building from deep and running he was often making strong runs but pass either came too late or didn't come. Midfield cleared out from kick outs #1 and #2 even in possession we didn't make use! Hope that's clearer

Leitrim I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who's on the John O'regan hype train. I thought he was outstanding in the minor final last year. Always in the right place at the right time, linked up with Liam Kelly really well and maybe that's our future at 3 and 6 (obviously not right away but in 5 years time) if they can maintain their trajectory into adult football.

Definitely agree. Carolan at 6 was a strange one, they tried Oisin Martin at 6 in a league game too and that also didn't work at all. I think ideally Aaron Chinchilla would have been the 6 but to be honest we probably didn't have one. It's crucial we solve that next year and it'll probably be up to John O'Regan. And you are correct 9 starters underage against next year, and then you'd expect a few more of the 2021 minors to be ready. But it will be a learning curve. Adult championship will hopefully bring them on, and if we are to do anything at this level the S&C of the guys still available next year must improve as you'd expect it to. What annoyed me was that we didn't lose through just talent or power, we lost through game intelligence which maybe comes with experience but can also come with coaching. I don't think we should throw the baby out with the bath water. I like the progression of the manager from minor to 20's (as much for the managers progression as the players), but we must learn from it and if we do we can come back next year and make an impact on this grade which is an absolute must next year given the 2020&21 minors will be the older 2 ages

Look I wouldn't call for the manager head at this stage either. But I will say this. McCarthy will be the most under pressure manager in Meath next year. (Evan ahead of a new senior manager) He will have the majority of players with a all ire medal in their pocket to pick from. There is expectations, after last years minor success we were all given a huge lift, mess it up and another generation of Meath football is gone I fear. Let's call a spade a spade here. We have better players than Dublin and yet let them destroy us by been tactically inept (that's on manager) man marking? My god dub manager must have thought all his birthdays came together, it was so easy to outplay Meath it was at times verging on embarrassing. I will say this clearly nothing short of a Leinster win and a all Ireland final appearance will be good enough next year. McCarthy must learn quickly, we will give him a pass this year.

So it'll be the team McCarthy has worked with all the way up through age grade. Cathal O'Bric will be in charge of his minor all ireland winning team at U20 level in 2024. The current group (2022) were also knocked out in the first round of Leinster in 2019 by Dublin i believe with most of that team being a year younger than they played at. And that's what McCarthy will be working with next year and hopefully is already working with them building towards a real tilt at an U20 all ireland in 2023. Teams don't always transfer from minor to U20/U21 as we've discussed before and it's about getting some of these lads ready for senior intercounty. Winning minors and U20's is great but ultimately its an underage medal and much and all as they're great its all about the senior team As you say McCarthy is maybe naive tactically but lets not forget Kelly, Emmanuel and Corbett are all 18 and we'd 6 other lads who are 19 and they were playing guys who are mostly 20... there's huge jumps physically for each year at that stage in phsyique etc so hopefully these players will be stronger and more tactically aware for the experiences in 2023 Also TBF to McCarthy he didn't work with this team at minor level it was Conor O'Donoghue who managed them so i believe he probably already has one eye to next year and its why the like of Kelly, Corbett and Emmanuel are already involved. That doesn't excuse McCarthy's naivety though in picking Carolan at 6 when he's never played there in his life. Things like that just don't make any sense. brian (Meath) - Posts: 1973 - 25/04/2022 10:16:50 2412961 Link 6 |

So i'm gona give the Management Team the benefit of the doubt. One line of argument or discussion seems to be that WE are playing players who have another two more years at this grade , in order to give them that exposure & experience with the intention that come the u20 competition of 2024, these Lads are ready to make another tilt at repeating their All ireland success ?....In conjunction with that , it seems to be that the lads who are of this Age ...were not particularly strong...so the Panel needed this influx of last years under 17s, and also the relatively successful 17s of 2020 Now, If this is the PLAN...well then the description of wednesday as " Men against Boys"...is actually factually correct....So For instance O Dwyer on Liam Kelly .... I happen to think this Plan , has significant flaws, , and irrespective of short term "results"....which should never be the driving force in assessing underage development Plans....i am worried as to what Scars were inflicted , not just last wednesday, but over the course of this u20 campaign. Finally..."lessons" to be learned........This should not be down to the Current Management Team...deciding among themselves..what they must learn.... . By no means using this as excuse but the structure of the competition that has a team playing 2 championship games within a 5 day period needs to be looked at. After senior county football this is the next highest level and it is doing the competing teams a disservice by having them play championship games so close together. What is the big rush with the competition because the senior inter-county championship will be holding up the club scene anyway. Neither camp could feel too downhearted , as the game was a cracker, with some excellent football, and the usual mistakes associated with the occasion. No issues with organisation or structure coming part at the seam , rather a full contest , with benches being emptied , and dublin within an inch or two of forcing extra time/replay ......On this evidence the Kildare Camp way ahead of what we witnessed in Parnell park Thelongwoodslasher (Meath) - Posts: 401 - 29/04/2022 09:40:30 2413993 Link 1 |
Watched dubs kdare last night.it was a cracker of a game.wasnt at meath dub game but are we just year early for this 20s team.and if john mcarthy is manager.id let him pick hisbown selectors coaches.too many along the line this year in my thinking.seen them play laois in clonard.it was all over the shop.were these ex meath bosses selectors put with him.or did he bring them on board.?? well either way, it doesn't speak well of Him...if it was his choice ot have the United Nations National Assembly Committee or whether it was forced on him....he just has to answer for two different mistakes ....but without doubt, it resulted in a below performance form this group in 2022, and i for one think we should be maxing out in getting everything from a group every year

Any news on the make up of the panel for Meath U20's in 2024? This should be an exciting group of players with a real prospect of achieving success in the coming year if things go well. A high level of talent in the county for this age group! winatallcost (Meath) - Posts: 587 - 13/12/2023 11:02:34 2516585 Link 0 |
I heard the panel was cut to 40 on Monday night but a number of the Minor all Ireland squad are all out with long term injuries ( 3 definitely) so a few will be missing when the squad is finally announced.

The panel is cut to 38/39 I believe. Mossy Corbett is the only one i'm aware of that is out due to knee injury which is a great pity as he was a fantastic player on that minor squad. A few injuries with players but all should be good to have a strong and best panel available by championship so all should go well we would hope! redracoon (Meath) - Posts: 57 - 14/12/2023 21:11:12 2516836 Link 0 |
Josh harford also out with knee injuries
