I won't lose sleep over the result of our first game in January, but looking at the team sheet it doesn't seem that too many new faces were getting a look in. About 11 of that team starting last night are championship starters, do we really need to play them in an O'Byrne Cup game? CastleBravo (Meath) - Posts: 1664 - 13/01/2022 09:55:05 2394692 Link 18 |

Not at game but on mcentees interview he states that the few subs who did well, were not even training with team.now begsbto differ here if club players can walk in and do better than what we have on panel.i worry for us this season. They might be training with their colleges for Sigerson and why they're not involved. Or maybe as you say it's new lads. Andy has said the only new faces this year are Billy Hogan, Gavin McGowan, Saran O'Fionnagain and James O'Hare although they had Conor Harnan and Adam Kealey on the bench who to me are new!! Think it's time to be brutally honest about things that Andy knows he's done and will not be that invested in developing the team anything further than he already has. This is going to be an absolutely lost year for Meath football and the likes of Keoghan and Menton are playing out their time in a Meath jersey having never had a chance to win something. brian (Meath) - Posts: 1973 - 13/01/2022 11:01:54 2394711 Link 16 |
How are these embarrassing and totally over reactionary comments allowed be published? Do people realize it was a first round O'Byrne Cup match on a Wednesday night in a club grounds in Laois? The team played Monaghan a week to ten days ago and only lost by a point, but because that was a friendly nobody knows anything about it, yet lasts nights match for some seems to be the be all and end all! Some players are only back from injury and others are juggling college football commitments as well. These are just public training matches. For context. Tyrone, all Ireland champions got walloped by 15 points by Cavan on Tuesday night. Does this now mean Tyrone's season is in tatters and Cavan are now one of the favorites' for the All Ireland? It must be given the stock in which people place in these pre season tournament games. Lads need to calm down. I wouldn't be pressing the panic button because we lost an O'Byrne cup game . Same as I wouldn't be booking the monday after the All Ireland final off if we had hammered them by 20 points. It's a pre season competition . Wexford scored 6 goals v Laois and hammered them last weekend and I would not be one bit suprised if we go and beat Wexford at the weekend . It's that type of competition . I'll be reserving judgement until the league starts and I see how we perform in that and then on to Championship. Blackspot09 (Meath) - Posts: 1003 - 13/01/2022 12:18:24 2394722 Link 1 |
Couldn't agree more. Last nights game was a complete makeshift team especially from 2-9 with lads either only making debuts, coming back after longs spells out and/or playing completely out of position. This competition means absolutely nothing apart from organized game time and opportunities to try lads out in different positions etc. The Tyorne game mentioned above is a perfect example of how these games should not be taken seriously at all, and the only thing that matters is Galway in 2-3 weeks time. I'd expect a stronger team to line out against Wexford but again, I won't care about the result one bit, its literally about getting minutes into lads legs and prepping for the League where we will be aiming to secure promotion once again

Well said Big Joe. People losing their **** over losing to Laois in the first game of the O'Byrne cup. Would these people be on here shouting from the rooftops if we had beaten Laois out the gate last night ? Unlikely they would have been. More likely they'd be on playing down the victory because it's only the O'Byrne cup

BigJoe14 i think people can look at these things in the context of what they are. This is the panel that Andy has worked with for 6 years, it's not a new management team. There 4-6 new faces so it's not as if there's a revolution happening within the team. They've played together before so it's not as if they're strangers. This is the first game of the year that we know what is happening. You mentioned a game v Monaghan, care to share the details as it's not well known to the public there was a game. I saw on twitter last night oh we're only playing half a team, so were Laois. The context of this game was Laois lost by 15 points to Wexford on Saturday and Wexford were beaten by Wicklow last night. That's context for you. Meath scored 2 points in the first half, there's context. Two lads who played for the colleges the night before (Walsh and Devine) were on the panel, there's context. In the context of the Tyrone Cavan game, Tyrone started 4 of their all ireland winning team and were just back from their team holiday. Cavan had played at the weekend and were beaten. People are entitled to have an opinion on things, no matter what their opinion is so maybe stop running down what some people think because it doesn't agree with what you think. Many people within the county are gravely concerned about the year ahead and what might happen. You may be the opposite of that and that's fair enough. But last nights fare followed a very similar trend that's been going on for two years. Gave a huge head start to an opponent and tried chasing them down and weren't close. To me and it's just my opinion, the definition of insanity is trying the same things over and over and expecting a different result, This is what's happening with our senior men's team. brian (Meath) - Posts: 1973 - 13/01/2022 12:29:44 2394726 Link 13 |

I think this is a good point. And the result of O'Byrne cup games doesn't really concern me. Players could be in the middle of a hard block of training, we might not be focusing on it at all so the result doesn't concern me. What is concerning though was how stale things seemed. Gavin McGowan the only new face that played yesterday I think. Also kickouts in the first half were an absolute disaster. Colgan didn't have the kick to go over the press and when it landed at midfield we got cleaned out. To come back after the off season and still have Colgan in goal and Thomas O'Reilly (who played decently) on the frees is really disheartening and frustrating. We still have a lot of players to come back and if Shane Walsh, Jordy Morris and Cathal Hickey play brilliantly on Saturday we'll have the feel good factor back. But the lack of freshness or energy last night did concern me

If we hammer Wexford on Saturday after them putting 6 goals past Laois at the weekend will you be on here shouting from the rooftops about good we are and about how good this season is going to be?
