New Players For 2021

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Now that the mess about the management team was put to bed does anybody have any names of guys putting their hand up for their clubs that they'd like to see included on the Meath panel for next year. Some names I'd throw out Andy Beakey (he's improved some amount in 2 years since he was under 20 and looks a very good keeper), Conor Harford, James O'Hare, Daithi McGowan, Frank O'Reilly, Michael Flood, Aaron Lynch, Kieran Slavin and Cathal Finnegan. Not saying they all will be called up but just throwing names out. On a side note there's some players who I think are under 20 who weren't stars at minor level putting their hand up good under 20's next year if they want to play (Oisin Martin, Tom Gavigan and Diarmuid Moriarty). I do think the level of young talent in the county is increasing

Some very good names there, really interested to see the semi finals in 2 weeks time. We'll see how good the likes of Lynch, O Hare, McGowan and O Reilly are.

On the goalkeeper, I think the Ratoath keeper could be a very good shout, looked very good the last day. Pluck from BB also worth a mention.

I think we need to find another man marking corner back as well as a fullback, if Lavin or McGill are missing we really struggle in the fullback line. It would also add competition. Ronan Ryan and McCoy have really impressed anytime I seen them and both can play in the fullback line.

Adam McDonnell and James O Hare would strengthen the half back line depth. Also Criag Lowndes would be a fantastic addition.

I don't think there's too many good midfield options in the county though. Seen 3 of the quarter finals last weekend and besides Ronan Jones there was no one putting their hand up.

McMahon, Lenihan, Joey Wallace all have looked the part so far in Championship. Daithi McGowan would give you an option for kickouts at wing forward. I think Cian O Neill from the Tones could be a good target man, he caused Na Fianna plenty of problems last Saturday. I'd like to see Eoghan Frayne, David McEntee and Jack McNally get game time this year to see can they step up to the next level.

Eoghan Frayne is 18. Eligible for under 20 in 2022 and 2023.

Not a Dunboyne man nor am I a man from any of the other 7 clubs that were in the Senior quarter final.

I've heard David McEntee is struggling to make the Dunboyne team. Only seen him twice this year and both times he's impressed so I struggle to see why unless he's not doing it in training/ in-house games.

He's not struggling to make his club team. He's a guaranteed nailed on starter for his club. He's struggling to stay fit for a prolonged period of time so that he can start regularly for his club team.

Would it be possible that we see the return of Shane Gallagher and Niall Kane to the panel for 2022? Gallagher was a solid corner back and better than anyone that's been used there since to try and replace him? Kane got a run of games in 2019 and then broke his arm i think and hasn't been used since. Are both players worthy of being brought back in and used?

Shane Walsh will hopefully also have his injuries cleared up and be fully ready to go. Lets not forget he's only 20/21 and should be making some big jumps physically and in game maturity.

Ronan Jones will also be back and ready to play a full season for the first time in 4 years. I'm hopeful he could have a big impact and we can start grooming the team around him at midfield.

On bringing in some of the 2020 and 2021 minors notably Eoghan Frayne I'd resist the temptation to do that and let them develop at their own rate and with their peers. Frayne's time will come along with plenty others from these two teams like Luke Kelly, Thomas Corbett, Sean Emmanuel, Shaun Leonard, Jack Kinlough and Oisin O'Mhurchu, Ciaran Caulfield, Conor Gray, Ruari Kinsella but they need time to grow into themselves. Let Barry Horgan (think that's his name) work with John McCarthy and Cathal O'Bric and the next group of minors coming through over the next 3-5 years that when they are 21/22 they're being introduced into a stable senior environment and not being relied upon to be a star straight away. You'll have one or 2 come through early but we possibly brought Shane Walsh, Matthew Costello and Cathal Hickey in too early. Luckily they've embraced it and we're running straight away but not everyone will be like that.

As some have mentioned the names like Sean Brennan, James o'Hare, Oisin McCloskey, Liam Byrne, Conor Harford, Jack Flynn, Luke Mitchell and Niall Finnerty could benefit from being involved with the squad, have them doing the gym programs and involved in the behind closed door matches to see if the are at the level required. I was watching an interview with Graham Geraghty during the week and he mentioned how Boylan had him in when he was 17/18 with the panel for months before he went back to minor and U21 panels, believe similar happened with Darren Fay at 18... give these lads a sample of the environment and what its like at senior level and see if they sink or swim and allow them back to development squads if they're faltering.

Hopefully new blood can be added to panel, especially if new format is introduced in coming days and so more games.. There are few positions on current team that could be described as nailed on, not saying talent is not there, however, right down central spine from 3 to 14 needs strengthing, Ronan Jones at midfield? apart from that several positions are up for grabs
Who is our best centre back, centre and full fordward?

I thought that Liam Kelly from Ratoath was the full back of the future?

Think that's a fair assessment. We've a squad full of honest triers but no real superstar. I reckon most of us could predict 10-12 of those who'll start our first championship game and thats not good. Our best player is on the down slope now and can have great days but i think he's going to gradually be caught out over 2022 and 2023 if he plays that long.

As you say if we could get our spine right it would be great. McGill is nailed on. Hasn't been great in 20 and 21 but he has the ability. We don't have a replacement for him and its likley that his club mate Liam Kelly will be the future of the spot, so they'll be duking it out there before it comes to the Green and Gold. CHB is a lottery and i still expect the name to be Shane McEntee regardless of how he does. Ronan Ryan has played as a sweeper but it looks like he needs to be an extra defender and not play in a six man defence, or he gets exposed. Jones is a certainty for 8 or 9. Menton will likely be his partner. But who supports those guys? Harnan has filled in but he'd be better at WB/WF, Jack Flynn might be too young and inexperienced to be an option. Matthew Costello has the engine but see Harnan, better as a WB/WF. 11 is as big a problem as 6. We have no one who can play the role. For years i thought Newman should've been here but managers saw better as they should. COS has been played here but i think he needs to be in a less central role to get the best out of him. 14 I'd imagine will be Walsh with Jordy Moris inside. But the instruction needs to be that he stays inside and develop the chemistry with Morris and become a lethal duo

He has to get a head of McGill in the club before he can even be considered as a full back for Meath.

Adam O Neill could be a good shout for the 20's next year, playing fullback for strong senior club at that age makes for good reading.

Muldoon also deserves a shot with the seniors at some point, he's tigerish and clever with possession.

Had Adam Muldoon even been getting a start for Kells? Seems to have been sub a good bit this year?
