Super 8 Play-Off/Round 4 Qualifier

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I really hope the lads can bounce back and make the Super 8s, and I think they can do it. Now it's going to be very tough, very few if any beaten provincial finalists have come back to win the round 4 qualifier this decade.

I just hope the lads are mad to put things right after the last day and are itching to get back out on the field. Also the experience of playing 3 more games against top level (of near top at least) opposition will be invaluable before Division 1 next year.

Fingers crossed McEntee can keep the lads together and focused for this challenge......that is if he doesn't give them the weekend off to play club hurling.

If we get Mayo or Tyrone in next Round we won't make the Super 8's. If we get any of the others I think we will

I'd be fairly sure one or perhaps both of them might not be in it.
Armagh are the form team of the moment and Kildare are decent on theirday.

I'd be of the opinion that we should play the best teams left, ie; Tyrone or Mayo. That way if we defeat them we make the Super 8's out of quality. Id prefer that than meeting for example Westmeath or Clare and maybe winning by a few points only to be shown up in the Super 8's. I mean that with respect to all opposition. If we're good enough in a Rd.4 qualifier to beat a quality side then we deserve to be in the last 8.

I agree with the above though; Mayo and Tyrone could both be in trouble this weekend.

Have no doubt that Clare Westmeath Offaly etc are hoping to draw us .. As we are rated by the press etc as one of he "weaker " teams .

Absolutely, remember we cant draw Offaly or Laois. In my eyes we are one of the potentially weaker teams at top 8-14 level, but my point is that if we make the 8's, we'd be better off beating good opposition to get there rather than (with respect) an average team who got lucky to get to the Rd.4, then youd have a situation where we'd be in the 8s after beating Laois, Offaly, Carlow, and potentially Westmeath or Clare. It'd be one hell of a poisoned chalice.

Tyrone is the nightmare tie. Armagh and Mayo would play a more open game. Westmeath/Clare the preference followed by Armagh/Mayo.

Listening to the Mayo game this evening, there is a chance one or two may have picked up a few knocks. Mayos short game was pretty poor tonight showing the necessity for hard pressing from the off. Tyrone seemed to play in 3rd gear throughout.

I say bring on Mayo or Tyrone.

We can not play Laois as its a repeat fixture of Leinster semi final, and no disrespect to Clare I think we should beat them. Also, IMO I would sooner play one of the top teams (division 1 teams) and see what we learnt from the Leinster final. It would be a measure of how the team and management are developing and learning. (Sure at this stage of the season its about learning quickly). And if you fail to beat or at least be competitive with them, do we have a right to be competitive in the Super 8's? Plus we will be playing in Castlebar or Omagh come next Spring, so why not.

I also believe that we will react from last Sunday and right the wrongs. I wouldn't fear Mayo or Tyrone. After all, we left a victory behind us in Pairc Tailteann last year so let's level the score. Bring them on!

Totally agree. However the one I want is mayo. There style would really suit us. Can't wait. Roll on Monday morning.

Mayo or Clare. Not saying we won't beat Tyrone, should have last year. Just want one of the other two. Particularly mayo.

If we get Clare and beat them it will highlight what a joke this format is. Getting to Super 8s by beating Clare, Offaly, Carlow and Loais. Couldn't see is beating Tyrone. Maybe Mayo with the injuries they have.

Portlaoise would be my guess.

My thinking If we get..

Tyrone: we probably play in in Clones
( we have a bad record against Northern teams probably be northern ref awell...) result we lose

Mayo: Hyde Park
(its more or less a home game for Mayo its going to a tough ask to win down there.) result we lose

Clare: Portloaise (Portloaise will suit us and we could and should win no disrespect to Clare they are fine side) result win

So I am for the drawing getting the so called easier side get into to super 8's and see where that takes us.

I heard Peter Canavan saying last night when pushed he/Tyrone rather avoid Galway in the draw, and why would they want to make things difficult for themselves. So why should we.

Agree RD, I'd imagine Portlaoise for Clare.

Meath v. Mayo would be very interesting indeed. Traditionally a very intriguing game. The neutral venue for such a game would be Longford maybe? Or Maybe Cavan? Or Mullingar? Perhaps Cavan/Mullingar is wishful thinking. Mayo might fancy this game in Roscommon.

Meath v. Tyrone: seems like Cavan or Clones would be the obvious venue.

All in all three very interesting possibilities.
