MFC Premier Cup final: late Mulcrone winner sees O'Mahony's edge extra-time thriller

Substitute Conor Mulcrone was the hero as Navan O’Mahony’s claimed the Minor Football Championship Premier Cup title after extra-time in a very exciting final played at Fr McManus Park, Skryne. PHOTOS

Callum Kelly put Donaghmore Ashbourne on the scoreboard first before Liam Coleman responded for O’Mahony’s with a brilliant two-pointer. The sides were level at 0-5 each at the end of the first quarter before the Moors took over.

The impressive Liam Tuohy hit 1-2 in the space of eight minutes and, along with a Kelly single, helped open up a six-point lead. Daniel Carolan and Robert Ryan kept the Hoops in the game with fine scores as Donaghmore Ashbourne took a 1-9 to 0-7 lead into the half-time break.

Joe Canannon and Finn Moore extended that lead to seven early in the second half before the O’Mahony’s fightback began. Full-forward Mark Gordon raised a green flag and, minutes later, Cody Clarke was in for goal number two with ten minutes remaining.

Canannon sent over his third point of the half to put his team two up with the clock ticking down. Coleman made it a one-point game from a free and, just before the full-time whistle, Ryan McKenna raised a white flag to send the game to extra-time.

McKenna put his team in front in the opening minute of extra-time. Kelly and Canannon responded for the team in green and they led by the minimum at the break.

Despite dominating possession, O’Mahony’s found the going tough in front of goal. Coleman tied up the game before, just ahead of the full-time whistle, Mulcrone stepped up with the winning point.

After the game, Laura Campion presented the Premier Cup to Navan O’Mahony’s captain Anthony McGuinness.
