Slane 3-18 St Ultan’s 0-14
One of the favourites for Junior Football Championship honours, Slane, proved too strong for St Ultan’s in this Group A Round 2 clash at Páirc Baile Ghib.
St Ultan’s, who recorded an impressive win over neighbours Dunderry in Round 1, were well in contention at the break despite making a difficult start.
Slane raced into a 1-2 to 0-0 lead inside the opening ten minutes. Peter Martyn got the scoreboard moving when he palmed the ball to the St Ultan’s net before Senan Duffy and Matthew Tully added points.
A comfortable win looked on the cards for Marty Barrett’s charges, but St Ultan’s battled their way back into the contest to draw level at 0-9 to 1-6 by half-time.
The influential Darragh Reilly kicked four points, while Tommy Buchanan, Ruairi Buchanan, Adam Rogers, goalkeeper Keith Hennessy and Conor Finnegan also raised white flags to give Darren Fay’s men parity at the interval.
Hennessy kicked St Ultan’s in front with a two-pointer in the early stages of the second half, but Slane quickly regained control. Ethan Harding, Duffy and Eoin Feeley were on target before Tully netted from the penalty spot to put daylight between the teams.
From there, the team in blue dominated. Duffy added a third goal soon afterwards and, with ten minutes remaining, Slane held a 3-11 to 0-13 advantage.
They closed out the game in style with further scores from Alan Harding, Tadhg Martyn, Éanna Mooney, Tully and Ethan Harding to secure their second championship win.
Next up for Slane is a meeting with Dunderry, while St Ultan’s take on Syddan.
