Summerhill picked up their first opening round win in three-years with this six-point win over Kilbride on Pitch 6 at Devenish Park, Dunganny.

A shock looked on the cards at half time when last year’s Mattie McDonnell Cup winners held a 1-7 to 0-5 lead and the Keegan Cup holders were struggling.

After a slow start David O’Leary kicked Kilbride’s first senior championship since 1978. Summerhill hit back with three white flags from the impressive Barry Dardis, Liam Shaw and Padraig Geraghty. Shaw added his second to put his side 0-4 to 0-2 in front before Josh Harford collected a long delivery from Andrew McWeeney before firing to the Summerhill net. That score ignited Anthony Moyles’ men. Four unanswered points from Adam Malone, O’Leary (2) and James Gavin put last year’s IFC winners five in front at the break.

That gap could have been bigger in the opening minutes of the second half when Harford’s goal bound effort hit the butt of the post and went wide. From there on the Summerhill woke from their slumber and took control. Dave Clare’s men began to dominate the breaking ball and for long periods Kilbride couldn’t get out of their own half. Davy Larkin and a two pointer free from keeper Sean Muddiman had the lead down to two. Shaw added a brace and the game was all square 0-10 to 1-7. Substitute Conor Frayne gave Summerhill the lead before the same player netted from the penalty spot after a foul on the impressive Barry Dardis. Dardis added to his tally before Kilbride got their only score of the half from an O”Leary free. Eoghan Frayne closed out the scoring and Summerhill made a winning start to their title defence.

The winners lined out without last year’s captain Ronan Ryan and lost Adam McDonnell in the warm up. Kilbride were without influential forward Conor McWeeney.
