Meath 2-10 Dublin 0-11

A large crowd descended on Devenish Park Dunganny to see Meath U16’s defeat a Dublin selection in the Tedd Webb Cup Shield final. PHOTOS

In the end a brace of goals in the second quarter from Dunshaughlin’s Cian O’Donnell was the deciding factor in this third/fouth place play off final.

Danny Gorman raised the first white flag and by the end of the first quarter the sides were level 0-4 each. The visitors, playing with the breeze took a three point lead with ten minutes remaining thanks to three two poinbters from half forward Zach Ramsey before the young Royals took over. 

Jamie Quirke added his second point, full forward Sam Walsh opened his account before Cian O’Donnell found the Dublin net twice before the half time whistle. Meath led at the break 2-6 to 0-8.

The scores dried up in the second half with a huge number of substitutions. Both teams used 31 players during the game with the finishing teams completely different from the starting sides, as well as players coming off and back on again.

With ten minutes left Meath had opened up a seven point lead thanks three points from Cillian Fitzimons, including a two point free, and a white flag from James Heery. Dublin kept the closing stages interesting with their fourth two pointer but by then Meath were well on their way to victory.

After the game Niall Gogarty presented the cup to Conor Larkin.

Manager Paul McManus and his squad now turn their attention to the Gerry Reilly Cup final against Cavan in Millbrook on Sunday. None of the starting team for the Gerry Reilly final were togged out for this Shield final.
