St. Michaels 0-18, Syddan 3-10
Syddan produced a powerful late surge to overturn a two point deficit in this pulsating finale to the division 3 round robin series in Syddan on Friday evening last, although having lost St. Michaels still advance to a semi-final meeting with Kilbride while Syddan avoid a relegation dog fight at the bottom of the table.
There was precious little to separate the sides throughout a contest that ebbed and flowed from start to finish. The game was level on three occasions and St. Michaels appeared to have the points in the bag as they led by two points entering the final three minutes, however Syddan found another gear and struck late with the winner one minute into injury time.
St. Michaels settled first and went seven points to the good through Gearoid O'Malley, Shane McDonnell, Lee Morris, Declan Reilly and Jack Griffin before Syddan opened their account on fourteen minutes. Matthew Halpin was a dominant presence at midfield for the visitors and kept his forwards in good supply of quality ball. The first significant setback for St. Michaels came on 19 minutes when Syddan found the back of their net, their goal tally increased six minutes later when they raised their second green flag. O'Malley and McDonnell added a brace of minors each to leave it 0-10 to 2-4 at the interval.
McDonnell pounced on an effort from Morris that came off the upright for the opening score of the new half but Syddan's next attack found the back of the St. Michaels net, the game ebbed and flowed for the remainder of the half with McDonnell, O'Malley, Brian O'Reilly and Paddy Tobin all on target for the visitors to leave them two in front with as many minutes left on the clock but the home side kept their cool and kicked the winner in injury time. They also hit the only two-pointer of the game on 47 minutes.
