St. Ciaran’s Community School Kells 8-9

St. Olivers Post Primary Oldcastle 6-12

St. Ciaran’s Community School came out on top in this goal fest 1st Year North Leinster football final played in windy conditions at Ballinlough. The win completes a good year for the Kells school who also claimed the North Leinster Senior Football C title back in January.

Oldcastle were on the scoreboard first with a goal but 1-1 from half forward Killian Connell had the Kells boys in front after four hectic minutes. Oldcastle dominated the next 15 minutes and opened up 3-3 to 1-1 lead. St. Ciaran’s recoved and another green flag from Connell and a first from the influential Peter Barrett had the game tied up. St. Oliver’s were in for another goal before the break to take a 4-5 to 3-5 lead to the half time huddle.

The Oldcastle school had one hand of the silverware after opening up a 6-10 to 4-8 lead with eight minutes remaining. But the Kells school refused to go away. Barrett with two quick fire goals and one from Louis Lynch along with a Connell point had St. Cairans in front. Oldcastle kicked the equaliser from a free and extra time looked on the cards. Full forward Lorcan Codd had other ideas when he got on the end of a Danny Keane free to punch home his sides 8th goal. Soon after Peter O’Halloran blew the full time whistle. Surrounded by both sets of players as to the final score the Drumconrath referee announced St. Cairans winners and sparked wild scenes of jubilation.
