Kilmainham 1-16, Kilmainhamwood 1-15
Our first competitive match of 2026 saw us take on Kilmainhamwood in Kilmainham on Saturday 28th February. After so many changes to fixtures and games it was great to finally get up and running. Our pitch was in great condition considering the dreadful weather, thanks to our pitch committee for having it in great order.
Both Kilmainham jerseys were on display as Kilmainhamwood forgot theirs. This made it challenging at times for both sets of players. This was a big match for both clubs. The winner of this match went into the final to play Moynalty. Dylan Morgan kicked a free to start things off. K’wood went down the other end to hit a free of their own, Morgan responded with a point from play. A poor mistake by Kilmainham resulted in a goal for K’wood on 11minutes. The game was tight with little to separate the teams. Morgan hit another 2 free’s, while K’wood hit a good point from play. On 16 minutes Kilmainham pounced for their goal. A poor short kick out from the K’wood net minder was intercepted, passed to Mickey Newman, who off loaded to Dylan Morgan who buried the ball to the back of the net. Kilmainham were deservedly back in front. K’wood responded with another free from Stafford before Dylan hit another 2 points from play to give us a 3-point lead at half time. A deserved lead with the wind.
Half-time score Kilmainham 1-7, Kilmainhamwood 1-4
Kilmainham knew that they would have to weather a lot of pressure especially against the wind in the second half. Kilmainham gained possession from the throw up but a wayward pass around the middle set K’wood on the attack, the ball was fed to their sharpshooter Stafford who hit a two pointer, game on! They hit another point from a free to level the match and were starting to get on top. Mickey Newman hit a soccer style point, as the ref allowed advantage for a foul. Newman drove the ball over the cross bar. Morgan hit another free to put us back in front by 2. From here it was all K’wood. They hit the next 2 points and then hit another 2 pointer to take control of the game. Kilmainham were struggling for possession and seemed to be getting punished for every mistake. Morgan hit another 2 points from play to keep us in the game before another 2 pointer for K’wood and a free looked to have got the away side over the line as they led by a point with time up. In typical Kilmainham fashion the lads kept going and never gave up. Dylan Morgan hit a nice point from play to level the match on the stroke of full time and the same man hit the winner in injury time to seal a narrow 1-point win for the lads. A good sporting match, separated by the minimum.
The Kilmainham management team will overall be very happy with the win. It was evident that we were not at our best and there was lots of mistakes and rustiness, but this game will stand to the lads going forward. With players to come back we can look forward to a good year ahead. Next up is a Tailteann Shield Final against our neighbours Moynalty. Details tbc. A big thank you to everyone that came out and supported the team. It is appreciated by the players and management team.
