Feis Cup: Gaeils make winning start

Gaeil Colmcille 2-13 Dunboyne 1-11

Gaeil Colmcille opened their Feis Cup campaign with a five point win over St. Peter’s, Dunboyne at Grangegodden with the Pitch 1 Turf holding off the recent bad spell of weather. 

The Kells side held a commanding 12 point lead midway through the second half but for the South Meath side to claw their way back into the game but for the Referee’s full time whistle to help Gaeil Colmcille hold on to the win.  

Gaeil Colmcilles two goals came from two teenagers, Liam Devine in the first half with the opening score of the game and Harry Butler with his kick of a ball in Adult football rifled the top corner of the net all but sealing Gaeils win. 

After Devines opener, Dunboyne responded with a point before two points from Oisin Reilly say Kells lead by 4. In an end to end match The Kells lads started to find their range with Ajay Tormey and Daniel Farrelly adding points. Tormey added a free before Aaron Browne hit a two pointer to leave Kells ahead by six with 24 minutes played. 

Two further points from Devine, Tormey and a free from Liam Barry saw Kells lead 1-10 to 0-04. Dunboyne added a point but Tormey’s fourth point of the half closed out the first half with Kells leading 1-11 to 0-05

Dunboyne hit the first score of the half with a lovely two pointer but Browne replied with a point to leave his tally at 0-03 for the afternoon. Kells rang in the changes with Adult debuts for Harry Butler, Charlie Twomey and Max Chamberlayne. While it was the trio making their first appearance, it was the veteran Beano Hanlon that got Kells 13th point. 

Butler’s goal on 49 minutes left Kells 12 clear leading 2-13 to 0-07. St. Peter’s started a fight back and with Liam Barry shown a black card with a tackle Sean Cavanagh would be proud of, it aided Dunboynes attack with the black and amber scoring the last 1-04 of the game but for time to run out as Kells held on for the win.
