Regionals: Dramatic finale secures opening win for Boyne Valley

2023 winners Boyne Valley opened their Meath Regional Football Championship campaign with a narrow win over holders Bru na Boinne at Dunganny.

The winners led 0-8 to 0-6 at the end of a low key opening half thanks to good scores from Cathal McConnell, Adam Quinn, Matthew Tully, Con Smith and Tadgh Martyn.

David Nolan’s charges increased that lead to eight in the opening ten minutes of the second half. A brace from Smith and one from Quinn along with the games first goal from Walterstown's Neil McGinley left the scoreline 1-11 to 0-6.

Adam Tuite threw the holders a lifeline with a fine goal and for the next ten minutes Bru na Boinne, playing with the breeze dominated. Paddy McGill (3), Tuite (3, 1 two pointer) and Matthew Tuite pointed and the game was level 1-12 apiece. Smith sent over a 45 for Boyne but with five minutes remaining Niall Ronan’s men were in front. Tuite raised a white flag and quickly followed with another two pointer while Matthew Tuite added his second to open a 1-16 to 1-13 lead and looking good for the win.

Smith left two in it as referee Keith Sheerin announced four minutes left. Bru na Boinne left a few chances behind them to close out the game and with a minute to go Boyne were awarded a penalty for a foot block. Up stepped Slane’s Matthew Tully who duly converted and seal the win for the team in yellow.
