St. Mary’s ended their long wait for a Meath football championship title with this narrow win over Moynalty in a thrilling Junior B final at Pairc Tailteann. The last time the Donore men were in the winners enclosure was 1979. PHOTOS

Moynalty dominated the opening quarter and opened up a 0-7 to 0-1 lead. A Paddy Byrne brace along with a fine effort from John Brogan got the scoreboard working before Caimin Hughes opened the Mary’s account. Moynalty good run continued with points from Joey Gilsenan, Ollie Sheridan (2), Bryan McCormack to open up a six point advantage. Andy Brien sent over a free from St. Mary’s and a minute later Cathal Sheridan was in for the games first goal. McCormack and Brien exchanged points and Derek O’Brien’s men went to the dressing room 0-8 to 1-3 in front.

That lead was extinguished in the opening four minutes of the second half. Brien added his third from a free and soon after substitute Sam Victory blasted goal number 2. Cathal Sheridan landed a monster two pointer and by the end of the third quarter quarter St. Mary’s led 2-6 to 0-9. Mc Cormack narrow that lead with a two pointer to set up a grand stand finish. Brien and McCormack exchanged points before the games crucial score came, half forward Hughes with his teams second two pointer and the lead was back to three. Byrne had it down to two as the clock read 28.35 but despite dominating possession until the hooter the score Moynalty needed never arrived and St. Mary’s were crowned champions.

After the game County Board Secretary Ciaran Flynn presented the Fintan Ginny Cup to James Lynch.
