Skryne refuse to let go on O'Rourke saga

Colm O'Rourke

On the evening Robbie Brennan was ratified as Meath's new manager, the Skryne club revisited the circumstances surrounding the departure of Colm O’Rourke at last night’s county committee meeting.

Delegate Oliver Harrington again voiced his displeasure at some of the answers he had received at the previous meeting and said he was no wiser leaving the meeting than he was coming into it. He felt that clubs weren’t given the respect that they deserved and were owed an apology.

Chairman Jason Plunkett again outlined some of the review process and the confidentiality involved in their dealings with Colm O’Rourke. He said the manager had lost a number of his backroom team, including Barry Callaghan and Stephen Bray, and they had told Colm O’Rourke that in order to make a positive recommendation they would need him to have a full backroom team in place.

The chairman reiterated that the review committee never gave Colm O’Rourke a deadline but in order to come back with a recommendation to the county committee they would have needed names. He said he held off on holding a county committee management meeting for five or six weeks.

“Ultimately Colm O’Rourke resigned from his position with no pressure from the review committee,” the chairman continued.

“Colm O’Rourke decided to resign, he took that decision from the county committee. So whatever that recommendation to the county committee was going to be Colm O’Rourke took that decision out of your hands by resigning. I had no intention of washing my linen in public. If you wanted to make a decision to keep Colm O’Rourke he took that out of your hands by resigning.”

The chairman said he would be happy to go through the review with the Skryne delegate in private but he wasn’t prepared to put it out on the floor
