An outstanding display of free taking by Jack Regan proved crucial as Kiltale came from two points down in injury time to earn a share of the spoils in this opening round of the Meath SHC against Ratoath at Pairc Tailteann. Regan finished with an impressive 13 points, 12 of them from frees. PHOTOS

With Daithi McGowan and Padraic O’Hanrahan to the fore Ratoath were 0-6 to 0-4 in front after 23 minutes. A wonderful point from Jack Lanigan increased their lead but scores from Regan, Daragh O’Doherty and Peter Durnin kept Kiltale in the game and they went in at the break 0-8 to 0-7 in arrears.

John Donoghue’s men dominated the opening ten minutes of the second half. Four points from Regan and the score of the game from corner back David Donoghue had the team in Maroon and Green three points up. Ratoath hit back with three unanswered points from McGowan, O’Hanrahan and another Lanigan monster veto level proceedings.

The sides were still level 0-15 each after 26 minutes. A Ciaran O’Hanrahan brace on the 29th and 30th minute seemed to be the match winners but in the three minutes of added on time Regan showed his class by landing two difficult frees and earn his team a share of the spoils.

Up next for Ratoath is Na Fianna on July 26th, Kitlae take on Blackhall Gaels in Rathmolyon.

Best wishes to Kiltale and former Meath keeper Shane McGann who marries Aoife Hunter tomorrow in Cork.
