Trim 1-10 Seneschalstown 0-08
Top of the league Seneschalstown travelled to Trim on Friday evening under glorious sunshine, in the hope of continuing their impressive winning streak of 5 wins from 5 starts. Trim on the other hand needed to turn their fortunes around after some recent poor results.
From the throw in there was an evident, physical intensity from the visitors that saw them opening the scoring with a well taken free in the 3rd minute. Shortly after, an explosive break from Conor Quigley drew the foul that was converted by Tom Carmody to get the home team off the blocks.
Back came the visitors to notch up a further free and an impressive point from play to put them 2 up.
This early start from the league leaders, rather than intimidate Trim, seemed to galvanise them into action. By the 13th minute Carmody had added his second point followed by a battling point a minute later by Sean Fitzgerald who had just come in off the bench.
Ian Byrne for Trim was increasingly threatening the opponent’s defence when, in the 15th minute, he was on the receiving end of a precisely delivered pass from David Lernihan to confidently stroke the ball into the Seneschalstown net. Shortly after, Byrne again drew a free to enable Carmody add to his tally. Superb blocks and intercepts followed from Carty and Bourke to break up repeated attacks by the visitors. Trim added 2 more Carmody points to put them up by a 6 point margin going in at the break.
Half time: Trim 1-06 Seneschalstown 0-03
Playing with the wind in the second half, Trim’s Carmody reopened proceedings with a lovely point from play only to be immediately answered by one from the visitors that got them back scoring after a surprising lull of some 24 minutes. The Red’s Robert Bourke, who was controlling midfield, then shuck off his marker and struck a beautiful long range point. In the 10 minutes that followed, Senceschalstown showed exactly why they are top of the table. They didn’t let their heads drop and slowly got themselves back into the game with well taken points from play from either wing. Having not scored for 15 minutes, Trim needed to build on their lead, which they duly did, when Carmody in the 18th minute, stepped up and struck a lovely point that gave the home spectators a certain level of comfort heading down the home straight. In the final 10 minutes the Trim defence had to repeatedly thwart Seneschalstown attacks through excellent work from Declan Dowling, Padraig Walshe and Kyle Ennis. The visitors added 2 more points from frees while Byrne for Trim added another to cap off his fine performance.
There can be no doubt that this was an excellent performance from Trim against a skilled, physical Seneschalstown team. What impressed most about their play was the hard, methodical work when taking the ball out from their back line. They repeatedly moved the ball intelligently across multiple players with a coolness and maturity that belied some of their young ages. Despite constant attacks from a very good visiting team, Trim held their shape and supported each other in a manner that would suggest very good preparation from all the coaching staff on the sideline. Simply put – this was a well prepared team. Seneschalstown will go away and reflect – and doubtless punish future opponents for the result in Trim on Friday evening.
