Dual star Brian Byrne will line out for the Kildare footballers in 2024 after making the switch from hurling.

The 2020 and ’22 Christy Ring Cup winning captain’s decision comes after a long season with county SFC and SHC double winners Naas, and after Kildare’s relegation from the Joe McDonagh Cup. Byrne impressed at full back for the Naas footballers this year and will concentrate on the big ball game at inter-county level for the foreseeable future.

While the news is a big boost to Kildare football manager Glenn Ryan, it’s a massive blow to his hurling successor Brian Dowling, who recently succeeded fellow Kilkenny man David Herity in the hotseat.
