Premier Div 7: Big win for O'Mahonys

June 28, 2022

O'Mahonys Aaron Coyle moves in to block Gavin Coyle (Curraha) during the premier Division 7 at Curraha

Navan O’Mahony’s 5-13 Curraha 0-11

In spite of playing against the hill and the wind in the first half, Navan O’Mahony’s held a five point interval at the break and pushed on for a comfortable win in the Premier 7 FC in Curraha this evening. It was a great team performance with nine Navan O’Mahony’s players on the scoresheet by the end.

Curraha opened the scoring with a point from play after two minutes. Robbie Keelaghan responded with a well taken point from play. Cian Murtagh was through on goal but the ball escaped his hands and found the foot of Darren Clarke, who duly found the net. The hosts rallied to equalise, scoring points from play before Keelaghan and captain Andy Leech put Ian Matthews side ahead again with a goal and a point respectively.

Despite two scores in response from Curraha, three points in a two-minute-period  from Barry McEvoy, Murtagh and corner-back Jack Boyle kept Navan O’Mahony’s in control. A Curraha free and a point from McEvoy saw out the half Navan O’Mahony’s 2-06 Curraha 0-07.

A blitz from Navan O’Mahony’s after the interval ensured that any hopes Curraha had of a comeback were well and truly put to bed. Keelaghan opened with a point and shortly afterwards Murtagh raised the green flag that he was unlucky not to get in the first half. Two points then came from Ciaran McGuinness old reliable left foot as well as a point from Dikey Loughran, who had been on a lot of ball up to this, setting up several scores.

Curraha scored for the first time after twelve minutes, but this was soon nullified by another Loughran effort. Substitute Sean Smyth and Keelaghan extended their sides lead with points from play, with the hosts raising white flags either side of these scores.

The game was decided by the final five minutes when Loughran and McEvoy added to their earlier points with a goal each to give the scoreboard a more polished look. As the scoreline shows, goals win matches and only for some great defending by Navan O’Mahony’s, it could have been a much tighter affair.  Craig Nolan, Darren Reilly, Andy Leech and Shane Crosby proved instrumental in many of the attacks for the Brews Hill side, many of which started right at the full back line.  Goalkeeper Brien Yourell pulled off some impressive saves, having a big impact on the outcome.

Navan O’Mahony’s: Brien Yourell, Jack Boyle (0-01), Craig Nolan, Darragh McGuinness, Ian Matthews, Cian Murtagh (1-01), Aaron Coyle, Shane Crosby, Andy Leech (0-01), Darren Clarke (1-0), Barry McEvoy (1-02), Ciaran McGuinness (0-02), Dikey Loughran (1-02), Robbie Keelaghan (1-03), Andrew Rogers
