Awards: Senior Club Footballer of the Year

December 24, 2020

Ratoath's Daithi McGowan

While 2020 was a year that we will all want to put to one side the county senior final provided a day of high drama that put Covid 19 out of our thoughts for a couple of days at least.

A limited but very vocal crowd, live on TG4 and a ‘dirty ball’ provided the ingredients for a very entertaining game.

In the end Ratoath put Keegan Cup titles back to back with that late, late goal from Joey Wallace. Gaeil Colmcille back in their first final in 29 years were dealt the cruellest of blows in what was an exceptional game of football.

Both teams showed all the form and deserved their place in the decider.

Ciaran O’Ferraigh, Conor McGill, Jack Gillespie, captain Bryan McMahon and Jack Flynn excelled for the county champions. Gaeil Colmcille’s day will surely come soon, were well served by James Reilly, Liam Ferguson, the Reilly brothers Fionn and Oisin, Martin Barrett, Seamus Mattimoe and Brian Hanlon.

Other players to stand out during the campaign were Mark Gardner, Brian Conlon and Padraig McKeever (Simonstown), Shane Walsh, Ethan Devine and Daniel Queeney (Na Fianna) and Summerhill’s John Lavelle.

Our award goes to Ratoath's Daithi McGowan. An exceptional and busy year for the dual star who lined out with Meath U20’s, the county hurlers and still has that small matter of the SHC final to look forward to in 2021. The half forward was a crucial outlet for Shane Duffy’s kick outs. His ability to take long range scores was a joy to watch and his free taking played a pivotal role as Ratoath put Keegan Cup titles back to back.

Well done Daithi.
