Galway boss Micheál Donoghue says Limerick deserve huge credit for the consistency of their performance against his side in today’s All-Ireland SHC final.

The Treaty men triumphed to an impressive 1-29 to 1-18 victory at Croke Park to land their first Liam MacCarthy Cup in two years and sixth since the beginning of the John Kiely era in the county.

Speaking to media afterwards, Donoghue said that the opposition came up with a mammoth performance on the biggest for a deserved victory.

"We were five down, at that stage we'd probably have taken that, hoping that we'd put in a bigger second half," Donoghue is quoted saying by GAA.ie.

"When you reflect on Limerick, the season they've had up to today, we were measuring it against lesser performances if you want to put it that way.

"Full credit to them, on the biggest day they probably gave the best performance in a long time. Full credit to John, his management team, and all of them."

He added: "Obviously, it's bitter today, and it's going to hurt for a few days. I've said over the last number of weeks that the younger fellas, in particular, it was important to be exposed to big games and meaningful games.

"Someone used the phrase, they learned in the fire today. It's a tough one to take. We will just soak it up, we've to go again."
