Former Kildare manager Cian O'Neill will coach the Galway footballers in 2022.

Manager Padraic Joyce has secured the services of the Kildare native who previously coached the Tipperary hurlers as well as the Mayo, Kerry and Cork football teams. O'Neill worked alongside Eamonn Fitzmaurice when Kerry won the All-Ireland title in 2014, while he was part of the Cork backroom team for the last two seasons.

He also managed Kildare from 2015 to '19.

A statement read: "Galway GAA is delighted to announce the appointment of Cian O’Neill to the Galway senior football backroom team.

"The Kildare man will join Pádraic Joyce next season as a coach."
