Kilkenny GAA is mourning the death of former county hurler Lester Ryan (Senior) who died in a tragic road accident yesterday.
Uncle of 2014 Kilkenny All-Ireland winning captain and namesake, the Clara clubman was killed after his bicycle collided with a tractor near his Kilkenny home on Saturday afternoon.
Ryan won two All-Ireland minor titles with Kilkenny before progressing onto the county senior team shortly after. Lining out alongside his brother Harry, he helped the Cats to three Leinster SHC titles during the 1980's and 1990's.
The 61-year-old worked as a coaching officer and was a member of the Leinster Council. He also served as a referee and on Poc Fada Committees.
His death is the second tragedy to strike the Ryan family in five years after the loss of his brother Johnny in a farm accident in January 2015.
All associated with Kilkenny GAA were deeply saddened to hear of the tragic passing of Lester Ryan (Senior). As a player and as a Coach he left his mark on the GAA community both in Kilkenny and beyond. We extend our sympathies to his Wife and family. Ar deis Dé go raibh a anam.
