Derek McGrath believes that Davy Fitzgerald can turn Antrim into hurling’s underdog story of 2025.

August saw Fitzgerald appointed as the Saffrons new senior hurling supremo on a two-year term with an option for a third, succeeding Darren Gleeson in the role.

Speaking to BelfastLive.co.uk ahead of the upcoming season, McGrath, who steered Waterford to an All-Ireland SHC final appearance in 2017, said he feels Clare native Fitzgerald can revive Antrim’s hopes and steer the Glensmen towards the Leinster championship’s business end this summer.

“For Antrim to be successful, they need buy-in. And I am guessing Davy’s positivity, standing, charisma will ensure that the vast majority of players in the county will get on board,” said McGrath.

“You need that. You can’t expect a manager to make a breakthrough if certain players have not made themselves available. But I think Davy will get those players on board and once that happens he will have a Leinster final within his sights.

“Remember Antrim beat Wexford last year; Wexford then drew with Dublin; Dublin made the Leinster decider.

“Davy will convince the Antrim lads they have what it takes to be in the mix for a place in the provincial final. No doubt about that.”
