Galway GAA is in mourning after the death of former All-Star hurler Michael Coleman.

An All-Ireland SHC winner with the Tribesmen in 1988, he is said to have died in an accident on Friday evening while he was clearing up storm damage near his home in Crumlin, Ballyglunin.

The three-time All-Star winner made his senior inter-county debut in 1987, enjoying Liam McCarthy Cup success the following year, and going on to have an outstanding career which saw him selected at centre-field on the GAA's team of the 1990s before his inter-county retirement in 1999.

Galway GAA led the tributes to him by tweeting: "We are deeply saddened to share the news that Abbeyknockmoy clubman Michael, an All-Ireland Senior hurling winner with Galway in 1988 has passed away.

"Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

"Full tribute to follow later today."

A minute's silence is set to be observed in Mr Coleman’s honour before this evening's Allianz Hurling League meeting between Galway and Clare at Pearse Stadium (7.30pm).
