a lot of people, including the Tomá O Sé's of this world had a "soft spot" for Galway when Galway used to rock up against their team, play lovely open football, barely put a tackle in all game, and take a high scoring 5 point loss. In a staggering, quite shocking development when Galway turned up to Croke park to win their first meaningful game there in nearly 20 years and beat kerry for the first time in 53 years last summer the style of play was an issue and Galway suddenly were not the housewifes favourite anymore. Draw your own conclusions.

New Galway Football Manager - 6 Like(s)

Replying To johnterry:  "He won with a load of stars on scholarships. He also lost to a teacher training college with a few hundred Male students. Maurice Sheridan had done an equally good job with NUIG"
I agree in the main. Im not sure we should be lauding achievements of winning when you have teams with Con O Callaghan , Mick Fitzsimons, Eoin Murchan, Ryan Wylie, John Heslin, Niall Kelly, Davy Byrne, Stephen Coen, Jack McCaffrey, Tommy Moolick, Jack Barry, Paul Mannion, Liam Silke and Colm Basquel I mean come on like. He might be a brilliant manager but winning the Sigerson with that kind of talent is like winning the SPL with Celtic.

Abuse Of KW & Some Players - 6 Like(s)
Agree entirely. The committment from management and players to any county team is massive. Kevin Walsh has been a fantastic servant to Galway football and will continue to be. I feel he has reached the end of the line in this role and i wish him well. We need to take a long hard look at ourselves as a county. A totally divided fanbase based on what part of the county we come from. Petty rivalries over not enough of our own clubmen on the pitch and worst of all pathetic attendances at games where as a county of 300,000 people we are massively outnumbered by roscommon in our own ground because salthill is too hard to get to apparently.

Replying To hopballref:  "My comparison of both teams. Only 5 of the Galway team would make the Mayo team in my view. Silke, Flynn, Walsh, Daly, Burke. And Comer obviously. Even with all Mayo injuries it is looking like a tough task. R.Lavelle/B. Power / D.CLARKE E.Kerin / C.BARRETT S.Andy / B.HARRISON L.SILKE / K.Higgins G.O.Donnell/K.Molloy / L.KEEGAN G.Bradshaw / C.BOYLE/M.PLUNKETT J.Daly / P.DURCAN T.FLYNN / D.Vaughan F.O.Curraoin / A.O.SHEA J.Heaney/Brannigan/Kelly/McDaid / F.MCDONAGH M.DALY / C.Loftus S.WALSH / M.Murray A.Laoi / K.MCLOUGHLIN I.BURKE / C.O.Connor/J.Doherty/A.Moran D.Cummins/P.Cooke / F.BOLAND"
The fact Galway have beaten mayo (literally with same players) 5 times on the trott in league and champo this past 3 years is bizarrely lost on people. I feel like Galway could beat Mayo 10 times in a row and people would still make mayo favourites and put them on a pedestal.

For someone adamant you aren't from Corofin your solutions to every problem in the Galway team across multiple posts is to exclusively name Corofin players to play instead of non Corofin players. Interesting.

Move Galway Vs Mayo To Tuam Stadium - 4 Like(s)
"Plenty parking" is often trotted out on here about Tuam stadium. That just simply isn't true and anyone who has been there on a big match day (county) would tell you that. Is Pearse worse? Yeah it probably is. I don't know why this topic comes up after every decent win Galway have in Tuam. Its a non starter for the foreseeable future. If Galway GAA ever decide to pump money into a stadium to make it intercounty caliber again i hope its on a green field site out in Oranmore so it can serve both codes and be easily accessed for everyone in the county

Culhane would be a good choice. He is a very successful businessman who would run Galway GAA like a business and not the amateur hour it seems to have become. Has good ideas and has pointed out some of the absolute basics Galway GAA is missing for example Galway GAA don't have an official shop in galway town which is crazy given the size of the county. If you want a galway jersey or hat you go to Elverys or buy one off a stall.

Genuinely looks like "Catch and Kick" is as far as our tactical plan goes. 15 of 30 of our own kickouts won. Thats Junior C level stuff. Some lads way way off the pace, not gonna attack individuals but fairly clear who some of them were today. Will be lucky to beat Sligo without a radical change of basically everything.

Connacht Championship 2019 - 3 Like(s)
Sunday Game having Sean Cavanagh moaning about structures and how tough Ulster teams have it. Im sorry but there are 3 connacht teams in Division 1 Sean, so Roscommon this year to win conancht will have to beat Leitrim (newly div 3) and then beat Mayo in Mayo and then Galway in Galway in order to do it. Meanwhile Kerry and Dublin might aswell be handed the provincial championship cups in May every year and neither team will so much as have a game where a team stays within 10 points of them. If you want to talk about championship structures and soft provincial championships start somewhere else than Connacht, stop being Ulster Centric in all your points and analyse the game viewers just bloody watched.

only Joe could make a tiny connemara club who have surpassed all reasonable expectations in brilliant spirit all year be the villains of the piece when they went into the game as massive underdogs and lost their 2nd best player just before kickoff to injury. The idea an Spidéal are a negative defensive team is absolute fantasy.

Senior Club Football Championship 2020 - 3 Like(s)

Replying To crafty:  "Moycullen are Salthill light with players from Cavan, Mayo etc... and surerly Mountbellew/Moylough should be two teams. How can it be fair to have 2 small towns joined together and have one team? Corofin are far from finished. All they need is 3 or 4 new players coming through and they could have them. I hope there is an All Ireland club championship and Moycullen will discover just how hard it is to win it."
Yes because no gaa club team in Ireland is two small villages joined up. Considering Corofin's pick and giant cachement area this is a bananas post.

Do Galway Senior Footballers Need A New Approach? - 3 Like(s)
Kevin has done an admirable job and picked us up from the depths of losing to the likes of antrim, wexford, laois and westmeath , the nadir of losing by near 20 pts at home to Mayo and basically being at the level of a division 3 side to an all ireland semi final and a league final. Beat Kerry for the first time in 50 odd years in championship, ended the croke park hoodoo beat Mayo three times running and gave Donegal a proper hiding up in Sligo the year before last. He brought the feel good back into Galway football from a very low ebb and expanded the pick for the panel beyond players born within 10 miles of tuam stadium which has been a very positive thing for football in the county as a whole. Time is right to go at the end of this season. Any call for him to go now is ridiculous as no man will take over a team mid competition and no man should be asked to leave either. I would be extremely hesitant to appoint the U20 ticket or frankly any coach whose CV is based on underage football as its an entirely different animal to senior inter county football. Playing nice "Galway style" attacking football is what we did for about 15 years after 2001 and the same people complaining about being too defensive now were complaining that we were too wide open and had no steel back then. A happy medium between the two is easier said than done unless you have the highest caliber of athletes and footballers like only the dubs and maybe the best mayo generation ever have. Watching yesterday when the commentator said Shane Walsh is 26 it made you realise this lad who is a once in a generation talent is going to be finished at the elite level in a few years , has no all stars yet, and is going to have spent his career playing intermediate club football and on a galway team flirting around the fringes. Sad.

Starting 15 For Championship (Football) - 3 Like(s)

Replying To StopTheLights:  "We were the only Div 1 team to lie down against Dublin. The Tyrone second half was shocking given what was on the line, (a national title with Dublin out of the picture v an over rated young Kerry team) " Ah sure its only the league" Look at the momentum Mayo have gained from bullying Kerry in the league final from an opportunity we gifted them!!! Yes we had injuries and yes we found some new talent which is great but can anyone honestly say they have any idea which Galway will show up against Mayo this year (assuming we get to the C Final) They will arrive in Pearse Stadium with a new self belief to meet an obviously confused Galway team. The pundits are as confused as we are about this Galway team. They all say we have the talent and great forwards but they have no idea what our style of play is. Neither do I. Tyrone changed their style of play in less than 1 year. Why cant we? A team without weapons and talent has to play defensive football to survive. That's not Galway any more. We need to dismantle defensive teams and systems not outlast them!!! Cut loose and have a go. Dublin will probably be a step too far ahead again this year. Kerry are smart and already aiming to be ready for next year. They'll have a go at everyone, gain knowledge and experience as they go."
Considering we have beaten Mayo 3 years running in championship and two years running in league i have a fair idea of what Galway will "show up" if we play them. Probably one that will narrowly beat them like they have for the last 5 games. Blowing Mayo up to be far better than they are based on a game v New York and a league final they somehow almost lost despite battering a poor kerry team, this is England's soccer team before a major tournament stuff. As for why KW plays the way we play i would think its fairly obvious that in his estimation we don't have the defenders to go man to man. The games against Tipperary in croker and Roscommon in Pearse probably made up his mind on that.

Replying To skillet:  "You're opening a can of worms there. Segregation is there for a reason. if Vikki played mens seniors (probably good enough tbf) you're guaranteed you'd have some bright spark canvassing for some lad with identity issues to have the 'right' to play ladies football. Don't need to look any further than the NZ Ladies Olympic weightlifting team to see how that turns out."
To be clear, she is very very very much not "probably good enough" to play mens senior club football in Meath. Neither was Cora Staunton in mayo. It's completely unfair on them to even suggest it. She is an absolutely brilliant footballer and well done to her on her award and performance in what was in my view the best game in any code this year.

I wasn''t allowed bring a can of coke in to the Div 4 final on Saturday. The reason i presume they would give is i might throw it at someone (Im assuming there is literally zero precedent for this ever happening in croke park). This has never happened at any other ground including Pearse Stadium, Hyde Park etc. The cynic in me says this is purely so you have to buy a -very overpriced- coke inside the ground instead. Very poor form from what is supposed to be an organisation by the people for the people.

Replying To padthepostman:  "Much talk on the forum about the standard of intermediate football and standard of galway football in general but when a team just promoted from Junior St Brendan's without there best player beats a team just relegated from senior breatnachs in the intermediate grade what else do you need to conclude about the standard of football in galway."
Not sure why anyone would judge the standard of club football in a county by how well the 20 something best team in it goes in a game. More valid would be to see the three time all ireland champions, the two teams who are the only teams in the country to give them a serious game in the last 4 years and the current all ireland intermediate champions are all in the county. Standard of galway club player is extremely high. The problem is we have loads of brilliant club players but not enough with that extra 5%-10% speed/power/quality to become elite quality county players.

Gleeson would not be my choice as he gives me kittens under a high ball or when out soloing slowly however Galway could have Cluxton in goal and he would look bad as we appear to have no discernible kickout strategy or lads breaking for a driven pass around the 45s like most teams have. Either the opposition give us a short one to a cornerback or we try and overload a side and bomb it out. Do not understand why a man like Cian O Neill so clearly driven by detail hasn't sorted this to at least make us middle of the pack at it.
