Another link with Galway’s 1956 All-Ireland SFC winning team has been severed with the passing of Frank Evers.
The much-travelled Menlough native died in Austria on Sunday at the age of 91. He won a Leinster Colleges SFC ‘A’ medal with Franciscan College, Multyfarnham and then a Leinster MFC with Westmeath in 1952 before going on to represent the Lake County – where his father was stationed as a Garda – at senior level.
However, after becoming a Garda himself, Frank moved back to Galway to live in Tuam and partnered Mattie McDonagh at midfield when the Tribesmen defeated Cork to lift the Sam Maguire in 1956. His work for the UN saw him spend time in Israel before moving to Canada and then finally to his wife Brigett’s native Graz in Austria.
Paying tribute to the deceased, Galway GAA posted online: “Frank was an accomplished footballer, partnering Mattie McDonagh at midfield in the Galway team that won the 1956 All-Ireland Senior Football final when they defeated Cork.
“He also enjoyed success with Westmeath winning a Leinster Minor Football Championship medal with them in 1952 and in the same year he went on to represent the county at senior level in the league.
“On behalf of Galway GAA, we express our deepest sympathies to his wife Brigette and the extended Evers family at this sad time.
“He will be sadly missed by his family, friends and the whole Galway GAA community. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.”
