Experienced midfielder Eoin Price has been named as the new Westmeath senior hurling captain.

Price, who scored 0-07 from play in the Walsh Cup defeat to Dublin last Sunday, has been an outstanding servant to the county down through the years.

The Clonkill clubman was part of the Christy Ring Cup winning squad in 2006, but it was 2007 before he made his debut and he has been an integral part of the side ever since.

A bad injury early this year threatened to end his county career, but he revealed to hoganstand.com that a call from manager Shane O’Brien changed his mind.

“I tore my calf away from my achilles and I was sidelined for six months, only making it back for the county SHC final,” said Price.

“I wasn’t sure at all if I would hurl this year and to be honest, I thought my county career was over, but Shane rang me one day and urged me to come back in and then asked me to be captain.

“I was surprised, but very honoured to be asked and I hope to give it my all in 2020. There is a great chance of winning the Joe McDonagh Cup, while we are in Division One of the league, playing against some of the best teams in the country and I believe that will stand to us.”

Price has represented Ireland at Shinty/Hurling level over the years, while this season saw him win his seventh Westmeath senior hurling title.
