Spillane sees streaming as double-edged sword

Pat Spillane has expressed concern about the impact streaming services are having on attendances at club matches.

While describing Clubber and other streaming services as ‘innovative’, the Kerry legend sees streaming as a double-edged sword for the GAA going forward.

“The streaming of club championships has brought the different club competitions to a whole new audience,"he wrote in the Sunday World.

“Coverage in general is not bad. Overall, it is not bad and a very welcome addition to the GAA scene.

“The dilemma now facing the GAA, and it’s approaching very quickly, and the big question that has to be asked, is if saturation level has been reached? It is noticeable in Kerry where Clubber TV shows most of the club matches.

“It has had a huge impact on attendances. Take last Sunday, the Senior Football Championship double-header in Fitzgerald Stadium, where Dingle played Templenoe and Dr Crokes faced Rathmore.

“Both matches were live on Clubber but the attendance was at most 500, an absolutely miserable turnout.”
