Tipperary star Dillon Quirke dies after collapsing mid-game

Tipperary GAA is in shock after the sudden passing of one of its young hurling stars Dillon Quirke.
Dillon was playing for his club Clonoulty/Rossmore yesterday (Friday) evening in a county senior hurling championship game against Kilruane MacDonaghs at Semple Stadium when he took ill and collapsed during the first-half.
The 24-year-old quickly received medical attention on the field and was transferred by ambulance to Tipperary University Hospital where he passed away.
Having won All-Ireland minor and U21 medals with Tipp in 2016 and 2018 respectively, Dillon made his senior debut with the Premier County against Limerick in January 2020. He started in all four of Tipp’s Munster championship outings this past season.
As a mark of respect, Tipperary county board has confirmed that all of its hurling championship games scheduled for this weekend have been postponed.
"Tipperary GAA extends its heartfelt and sincere sympathies to Dan, Hazel, Shannon, Kellie and the extended Quirke family. Also, to the Clonoulty Rossmore GAA Club and his teammates on the sad and tragic passing of Clonoulty Rossmore and Tipperary hurler Dillon Quirke," Tipperary GAA said in a statement.
"Dillon became ill during Friday evenings County Senior Hurling Championship game between Clonoulty Rossmore and Kilruane MacDonaghs in Semple Stadium and was taken to Tipperary University Hospital in Clonmel where he passed away.
"Tipperary GAA wish to thank all those who attended to Dillon in Semple Stadium and in Tipperary University Hospital this evening.
"As a mark of respect to Dillon, Tipperary GAA have called off all games due to take place in the County Hurling Championships this weekend."
