NUI Galway captured their first Sigerson Cup title since 2003 last night after overcoming UL by 0-12 to 1-6 in stormy conditions at IT Carlow.

Roscommon’s Cathal Heneghan came off the bench to score three crucial points for the Galway students as they claimed their university’s 23rd title, leaving them joint level in the overall roll of honour with UCC.

There had been no separating the sides at half-time as they went on 0-3 apiece in the difficult conditions, with Fionn McDonagh, Paul Kelly and Gavin Burke putting the first three points on the board for the winners.

UL’s first score wouldn’t arrive until the 19th minute via Paul Towey, but frees from David Clifford would see them all square by the break.

Heneghan was introduced for the second-half and fired over three quick points and NUIG would be six clear after captain Matthew Tierney (1 free) and Tomo Culhane (2) raised more white flags.

Clifford’s goal via a penalty in the 46th minute brought the Limerick students right back into contention but, despite narrowing the deficit down to one, they never got level again as McDonagh and Culhane ensured the victory for Maurice Sheridan's side.

It keeps the Galway university’s dream of a Sigerson and Fitzgibbon Cup double very much alive after their hurlers defeated GMIT yesterday.

NUI Galway were 1-26 to 3-18 winners over their city neighbours after extra time at Pearse Stadium, where Evan Niland led the way with 0-16 for the victors.

Jack Forde’s late goal forced extra time for GMIT, who saw Kevin Cooney land 1-10 on the day, but their opponents got the job done after that with Niland and Hurler of the Year Cian Lynch to the fore.

UL travel to take on IT Carlow tonight (throw-in 7.30pm) to decide who will face the Galway students in Saturday’s Fitzgibbon Cup decider.
