A New (Wick) Low

Is this a new low for Cavan football ?
Do you subscribe to the theory that The Championship is where it's at ? and the the league is not important or do you believe (like I do) , that the league is a true reflection of a team's worth. Last year's Ulster championship was fantastic and we can never take that away from them but Are we like Clare in 1992 or Leitrim in '94 , a flash in the pan, a one-off, once in a blue moon event and then it's normal service resumed. For a while we seemed to gain a little bit of consistency and were hovering around the top 10 or 12 but now we have plummeted down the divisions and have reached Div 4 for the first time.
Derry have been there recently as have Westmeath and Offally and one or 2 others who have managed to get out of it and start climbing again.
Why do we start games so slowly ?
why do we always try to catch the ball in midfield instead of breaking it ?
why do we rarely construct team scores especially goals ?. why dont we look up more often and palm or punch the ball to a forward in space. Why do we change our right footed freetakers so often ?. Why is our defence so weak this year. Why do some of our top players seem so reluctant to carry the ball forward instead of opting for safe sideways passes.
Is this really a new low ?
some people will be saying that we will see where we are at when we play Tyrone. I dont agree. Where we are at is right here, right now and it's div 4 and it is struggling against div 3 teams. That is where we are at and it is miles away from the top teams and even the teams just below the top teams…. Where did it all go wrong ?

It has been going wrong for years.Negative tactics has been instilled in these players from an early age. Academy squads in Cavan are a complete waste of time and money. Its just ticking the boxes. What are they doing in there. I pity the parents bringing their kids to these . Nowadays the focus is your athletic ability not your Football ability. If u can run all day and do a good bleep test your on the Cavan panel. It Seemingly doesn t matter if u havent a football brain or liathroids. I have seen a few Cavan players lately pulling out of tackles .We need to employ a forwards coach in Cavan. Someone who has been there and done it. .E.g Mickey Linden. The game has moved on. Cavan are so boring to watch its unbelieveable. As much as i hate saying it Monaghan are a Div 1 team who go out and attack. I think they have learned a lot a lot from last years defeat to Cavan. You play defensively if u think ur not good enough ..Looks like we didnt do any homework on Wicklow. Not good enough in this day and age with all the video technology they have. Cavan have a long road ahead of them .Mickey will probably move on. He has had a torrid time. A new face is needed with a fresh approach who will give the best players in our county a chance to impress. He needs to run trial games not just watch the county finals.Trial games to include current county players. Less bleep tests and more quality on the ball. Roll on

Tomsmith here

You ask where are we at .. well the answer is Division 4 and unless we get our act together we will stay down in Div 3 or 2 for a few years,
What is the answer to our problems is that we need to find new talent soon .. Our current crop of players you could pick any of twenty and these players are nearly all the same. Get Divisional teams set up find any new players that is t6he way to go

Cavan have contested the last two Ulster finals. Its a long shot that they will reach another one this year. But victory over a Tyrone side who conceded 6 goals yesterday will blank out yesterday.
Remember that Tipperary after the highs of last year also struggled in the league this season.

Tipperary struggled in the League last year also ,and needed to beat Leitrim to stay up in the final game
They lost a few key players since that Munster win.
Were lucky to reach the Munster final, extra time win against Limerick. A good display in the final, but Cork were really poor.

That's the hogan stand post of the weekend! Tom Smith from Cavan will now attempt to prey on new posters that haven't encountered him yet. Come on Tom, I can't wait to hear your next effort. You were quiet there for a good while.

I don't think last year can be called a flash in the pan. Not having made the final in 2019 too.

I'd rather be a championship team than a league team, and that's undoubtedly what we have been under Mickey.

The idea of gauging 'where we are at' will only work if each team is placing an equal amount of emphasis on the league and it's fairly obvious we simply aren't.

So how do you expect Cavan to compete for Ulster from Division 4 ? Cavan made the final in 19 having played Division 1 that year . Last year they were playing Division 2. Played Kildare and Roscommon before the championship... a fair cry from London, and Waterford.

You are aware that the league and championship are now linked aren't you? The league now determines which championship you play in.

We can now look forward to competing for the "tailteann cup" for a minimum of two years. How exciting!

agreed. We will be the only Ulster team in Div 4.. how on earth can you prepare for the Ulster championship in that situation. People talking up our chances v Tyrone because of how many Kerry put past them is ridiculous. We are not Kerry. What tactics are worked at in training, I wonder because there seems to be very little in evidence at the moment.

to be fair Cavan_Shambles , I think we still play in the ulster championship. We wont be playing in the back door though when we get beaten. That's when we enter the Tailteann Cup.

That's true but unless we either make the final or win it, we're going to the tailteann cup. It just feels so unnatural for a county like ours to be in division 4 and facing tailteann cup football.

Has any players or managers done an interview since? I'd like to hear one.

Look, I agree.

But I simply don't believe we are one of the bottom 8 teams in the country, and that if we prepared properly for the league and gave it the attention that some other teams do, then we'd not be close to Division 4.

There are some posters on here who have a hell of a lot more to say now than they did 7 months ago. That's absolutely pathetic.

No cavan supporter is happy to be in division 4. And we've a right to call is what it is.

But no real cavan supporter should call last year a fluke or a flash in the pan. It was back to back finals and a fully deserved win.

Looking objectively at it though, Cavan didn't have a consistent performance last year until the Ulster Championship final. Putting all the eggs into the championship and being 7 behind against Monaghan and 10 against Down wasn't part of the plan. It was obviously great comebacks but those teams collapsed also.. Monaghan sat back and just invited Cavan on

In the 3rd year under Mickey Graham ,a consistent level of performance should be happening, not just hoping for the best in Championship.

Why didn't we prepare properly and give it the attention it deserved?
To be fair last year was flash in the pan.
All the games in Ulster last year was hit and hope. And the lads played well and we got rub of the green.
There doesn't seem to be a system or idea of what the team is. No plan in what they are doing.
Unfortunately we will be waiting another while for an Ulster title but it was nice last year but we didn't build on it

Not preparing properly for the league is sheer foolishness.

What is there to be gained from not giving the league proper attention? Nothing.

What is there to lose from not giving the leage proper attention? First, our division 1 status. Then, our division 2 status. And finally, our division 3 status.

Tomsmth here from Cavan Gaels .... Cavans greatest club for the past 40 years.. I dont know whether you reply was witty / sarcasm laced or for whatever reason you picked on Tomsmith you effort lacked content .Indeed for a senior poster like Tomsmith to respond to you at all is a feather in your Cap But back to SGolderick comment I feel that the way to go is to set up Divisional teams

If you watched Kerry V Tyrone last weekend you will see how Kerry have adapted to the negative game and have polished it off. Cavan should sit down and study the way Kerry play now and if they have a go in coaching this county team to play their system it will be a joy to watch. I know Kerry have many quality players so have Cavan just getting it together. Not the end of the world being in Division 4 but they have to make sure it was just a flying visit.
Reading all the negative stuff this last few months makes you wonder do you deserve a team at all. I am sure many on here know the commitments that the lads put into their training I often wonder how they even have time to study to get an education.

The league is over get behind them for their next match in a few weeks time and wish them well.

Amateurs bursting their guts for what ??

Very interesting to hear the reflection on the We Are Cavan podcast last night . Apparently The Wicklow lads were over heard after the game having a laugh and a giggle about how bad Cavan were. "I always taught they were s*##" one said .
Separately, apparently an inter county team that played on Saturday burst into an almost sympathetic laugh when word had filtered that Cavan were relegated to division 4.
In the space of a few short weeks we have gone from being respected, feared and admired to being a complete and utter laughing stock......
