'I think it's a bit of a lost cause'

The redeveloped Casement Park

Northern Ireland soccer legend Gerry Armstrong has urged Stormont to forget about Casement Park hosting Euro 2028 Championship matches.

Armstrong, who lined out for St John’s GAC in Belfast before embarking on a successful soccer career, believes there are more important things in need of funding in Northern Ireland than a stadium revamp that would cost three time more than the original estimate.

His comments come after GAA president Jarlath Burns conceded that the West Belfast venue is unlikely to be redeveloped in time.

"I think it's a bit of a lost cause at the moment,” Armstrong told BBC NI.

"As much as I'd love to see Casement Park built, I can't see how it can be justified at the moment – there are so many other parts of the government, the National Health etc, that are more important than getting a stadium built.

"If they are going to make it happen, it is going to have to happen very quickly – but time is running out.

"It may well have already run out. If they don't have the finances they are going to have to make a decision. Casement Park probably will be built, but maybe not to the specifications of UEFA."
