One of the stories of the weekend was the crucial role Derek McNicholas played in helping the Westmeath hurlers to preserve their Division 1 status.

The veteran Lough Lene Gaels sharpshooter came off the bench in the 70th minute of Saturday’s Allianz Hurling relegation playoff against Laois in Thurles and scored two points from three touches to help Joe Fortune’s men to a 3-24 to 1-26 victory. McNicholas is the longest-serving inter-county hurler in the country, having made his senior debut way back in 2004.

Saturday’s cameo appearance came after he had taken a break from hurling following the recent birth of his baby son.
