MTU Cork are through to the quarter-finals of the Fitzgibbon Cup thanks to a 3-21 to 1-15 victory over UCD in Belfield last night (Thursday).

Alan Connolly, Mikey Finn and David O’Sullivan struck the goals for the visitors as they won out by a dozen points in the end to secure their place in the last eight with a round still remaining.

UCD made the better start to move into a 0-5 to 0-1 after the opening nine minutes, with Brendan Scanlan, Cian Ó Cathasaigh and Luke Connellan among their scorers. David Williams would add a goal for them on the quarte hour mark but their counterparts were able to get it all square with the help of points via Diarmuid Healy and Sean Walsh in the run up to half-time when the scoreboard read.

O’Sullivan came off the bench to hammer in MTU’s first goal nine minutes into the restart and, while Williams got a hat-trick of points for the hosts, it was the quickfire goals of Finn and Cork star Connolly that put a seal on the win for their team.

Meanwhile, DCU got their first win of this year’s competition against Maynooth at St Clare’s where it finished 2-22 to 2-17.

After having drawn with TUS Midwest in their opening round, Sam Bourke’s goal helped the Dublin students go up by four points early on and, while Cillian Hackett would bag a major at the other end, it was the hosts that carried in a 1-14 to 1-8 interval lead.

Colm Fogarty’s penalty midway through the second period gave Maynooth some hope, but they’d eventually fall to a five-point defeat after substitute Cian Boran lashed in DCU’s second major of the night.
