Glen and Rockies stave off relegation
August 24, 2012
Two of Cork's most successful hurling clubs, Glen Rovers and Blackrock, were breathing a sigh of relief after they defeated Cloyne and Bride Rovers respectively last weekend to avoid a SHC relegation dogfight.
Cloyne and Bride will now battle it out to see who makes the drop, while Glen and the Rockies turn their attention to their respective last-16 clashes with champions Carrigtwohill and Sarsfields in a double-header tomorrow.
"We're not finished, not for one second," Blackrock manager Ray Delaney told The Irish Examiner after his side's 2-11 to 0-14 win over Bride Rovers.
"A lot of people, both inside and outside the club, might have been thinking that we'd get over this and we'd be happy. That's not what Blackrock is about, it's about winning championship matches and we'll definitely give it a go."
Glen Rovers boss Tony Wall remarked after his side's 3-18 to 1-8 drubbing of Cloyne: "I said it to the players coming off, if they had heard the joke about the two famous city teams that were going for relegation!
"We knew that if we beat Cloyne we'd be in the fourth round, where we would have been if we had beaten the Barr's in the first round. That was our motivation, we never mentioned relegation, we never mentioned what was going to happen if we lost."
