McGrath Cup: Kerry, Tipp, CIT and UCC reach semis
January 18, 2010
All-Ireland champions Kerry progressed to the last four of the McGrath Cup yesterday along with Tipperary, Cork IT and UCC.
Two late Kieran Donaghy goals gave Jack O'Connor's side a hard-earned 2-12 to 3-5 victory over Waterford at Fitzgerald Stadium.
The teams were level at 1-3 to 0-6 at the interval and an upset looked to be on the cards when Liam O Lionain and Michael Donnelly netted early second half goals for the visitors. Waterford led by 3-4 to 0-11 with five minutes remaining, but Donaghy's late double denied them a famous win.
Barry Grogan scored 0-7 as Tipperary overcame Limerick IT by 2-13 to 2-6 at Thurles' Morris Park. Padraig O'Dwyer netted in the 21st minute to help Tipp to a slender 1-5 to 2-1 interval lead, with Ger Collins and Conor Daly goaling at the opposite end.
But with Grogan in unerring form, Tipp had pulled 1-13 to 2-4 clear before Donie Lynch's goal five minutes from the end settled it.
In Foynes, Cork star Paul Kerrigan's late deflected goal was the turning point in CIT's 2-8 to 0-11 victory over Limerick. The students led by 1-4 to 0-5 with Kerry youngster Barry John Walsh scoring their goal direct from a 40-metre free.
Limerick hit five unanswered points between the 46th and 55th minutes to lead by 0-11 to 1-5 before Kerrigan's shot took a deflection off Stephen Lavin en route to the net.
Michael McDermott's first game in charge of Clare ended in a 0-9 to 0-12 defeat to UCC at Cooraclare. The home side opened brightly and had established a 0-4 to 0-0 lead by the ninth minute before UCC hit six unanswered points to take a 0-6 to 0-4 lead into the break.
Points from David Tubridy and Laurence Healy brought Clare level on 0-8 apiece at the end of the third quarter, but late points from Paul Honohan, David Goold, David O'Callaghan and Sean Kiely sealed the students' win.
