'Hurling needs to be given oxygen'

New Cork minor hurling boss Donal Og Cusack

Donal Óg Cusack has lamented the lack of support at last weekend’s GAA Congress for the proposal to move the All-Ireland finals back into August.

The motion to extend the inter-county season by two weeks was withdrawn, with Cusack claiming it was a missed opportunity to promote hurling and camogie.

“Now there was a real opportunity for hurling. Imagine if the hurling and camogie All-Ireland finals moved into August,” the former Cork goalkeeper said on RTÉ’s Allianz League Sunday.

“Give the game time to breathe and real profile. I can’t see what the problem with that would be – with all due respect – in places like Wicklow, Kerry or Monaghan.

“With all due respect to what’s been going on up until now, we don’t need more ball eile sessions, workshops or pats on the head. We need serious investment and seriously brave decisions.

“Hurling needs to be given oxygen, not the sandwich that it’s been in the microwaved season over the last number of years. And there’s a serious opportunity if you were to play those hurling and camogie deciders in August for all of that promotion and growth.”
