Blues get past Whitegate
May 18, 2010
Newmarket-on-Fergus 3-10
Whitegate 0-14
Newmarket-on-Fergus had been made to work very hard indeed for their first win of the 2010 senior hurling championship by a good Whitegate team just promoted from intermediate. If anything it was probably the superior experience of the Blues which carried them to victory at Cusack Park on Sunday last.
Newmarket got the game's first score from Michael McInerney before Shane O'Rourke levelled and a long-range free from goalkeeper Andrew Fahey put Whitegate in front. David Barrett and Colin Ryan soon restored Newmarket 's lead before Ian Fahy levelled it again. A free from Ryan made it 0-4 to 0-3 and then the game turned on two Newmarket goals. First Barrett's pull on the ball ended up in Andrew Fahey's net and then Bernard Gaffney profited from good work by Eoin Hayes to raise a green flag. Points from Patrick Minogue and George Waterstone steadied Whitegate, for whom John O'Brien and Andrew Fahey also scored before half-time. However Newmarket points from Sean O'Connor, Ryan and Gaffney left them 2-7 to 0-7 ahead at the interval.
Whitegate almost got a goal as the second half began but had to be content with an Andrew Fahey 65. Eoin O'Brien soon responded before Whitegate whittled away the deficit with Eric Minogue, Stephen Malone, three Waterstone points and Andrew Fahey raising concern for the Blues. However a scoreless spell midway through the half suggested that Newmarket had weathered the storm. With five minutes to go Ryan's free put them back in front and then sub Jim McInerney's effort for a point appeared to go wide before Eoin O'Brien batted the ball back where it found Colin Ryan, who buried the ball to the net to kill Whitegate hopes. Another free from the corner-forward completed the scoring in a tempestuous finish to the game which saw both sides reduced to 14 men, Alan Barrett and Shane O'Rourke receiving their marching orders.
