Replying To JonSmith: "I was at the game and I don't think it's accurate to say we played a sweeper. For the most part Clifford was left one on one, first with Fortune and then with Nulty, then back to Fortune. The early yellow made it difficult for Fortune. Nulty should never have been left on him, this is where the bulk of the damage was done. To not focus on nullifying Clifford as priority number 1 going into this game was handing Kerry the game before the throw in. The most worrying thing was our inability to execute the basic skills of the game. A huge amount of scuffed shots, passes to Kerry men, handling errors. The Galway game was exactly the same except Galway didn't punish us. It's worrying just how far we were off Kerry. Don't let the comeback cover up how much better Kerry were. Kerry players were through on goal 3 times and showed mercy by taking their point. The best we can take from this is to see a couple of possible future Senior players in Cian Madden and James Smith. Madden has vision and skill and looks like a real leader. Smith is aggressive and has great hands. If they put in the commitment required they could be additions to the senior panel soon. Overall, we need to look at the level of coaching of youngsters within the county. While our Minors and U17s both reached Ulster finals this year, they have both ended the campaigns on hammerings. Derry, Tyrone and Kerry were operating on a much higher level than us. What can we do to bridge the gap? Are the tactics being employed finding the right balance between producing attacking players and giving ourselves the best chance of winning every game we play? Fair play to the lads on giving us a great year. Their U20 campaign will come around very fast, hopefully they can stick together and do what the 2011 U21s did and get their Ulster title second time around." This Cavan team were not in the top 6 in ulster at the start of the year. They were massive underdogs in every game . Yes there were some handling errors It was raining . But they never give up and preformed better than any Cavan team in croke park. Remember there was no college seccuss in Cavan for the last 2 years . Derry are winning at college level so are Kerry. Hogan cup winners in croke park this year. So for this Management team to lift a group of players to the top 4 in Ireland . Remarkable . The u17s were playing with one hand behind their back not being allowed to play a full team . To bring that team to an ulster final. They had to win games to get there . Remarkable . So credit where its due . Hats of to all involved for giving the true Cavan fans one hell of a summer . To try and blacken people who have brought a team to an all Ireland Semi final is very bitter . 2 ulster finals . All in one year . We need to look after these people. Not try and run them into the ground . This is what is wrong with Cavan . Countrywide2 (Cavan) - Posts: 11 - 22/08/2017 23:06:46 I was at this match we had Kerry on the rack with 15 minuets left they could not handle the changes Clifford or no Clifford. The game was turned when our number 8 went into a fifty fifty tackle and the game was delayed for ages. During that time Kerry recovered management made tactical changes unfortunately but credit to everyone involved with Cavan. Things were so bad in Croke Park our runner was not allowed onto the pitch yet Kerry could do what they liked. I did not stay for the senior Final as I must have got the worst ticket in Croke park I was soaked to the skin. The Quiet Man (Cavan) - Posts: 4601 - 08/02/2018 22:43:28 2075149 Link 0 |
Regarding Minors 2017, the thing is, they were beaten in the games that mattered most.! Once again we came out of Clones and Croke Park with nothing.

StirringIt (Cavan) - Posts: 324 - 05/03/2018 11:24:48 2081902 Were you at that match Cavan V Kerry yes or no. You come across as a very bitter person and probably a disappointed young player or jealous you did not get them there one or the other. John Brady was not allowed access to the 17 year olds and at least 5 of them would have played in most matches. So a hard ask when this happens and what value did Cavan put on the possibility of winning an All Ireland by blocking these players. Not bitter , not young enough to play ( unfortunately) and not raging because I'm not over the team. I have no one associated with the team, nor do I hold any malice against those in charge of any team as it is a thankless job. To answer your questions; I was at the Monaghan game, missed the Down game, was at the Ulster Final v Derry, the Galway game in Carrick and the Kerry Game in Croke Park. IMO they beat an average Monaghan side ( though it was a niggly match and some of our players should have been carded ). I can't comment on the Down game because I wasn't there, but we were always second best in the Ulster final. We thought we had a midfield until we came up against Derry, who were in total control. We fought hard against Galway, won by a goal and ended up in Croker. We were on top for about 15 minutes, when to be honest, I think Kerry thought the job was done and eased off. You can't say we ran them close when the margin of victory was 12 points. Clifford was outstanding and overall Kerry were in control and were by far the better team, which was proven when they hammered Derry in the final. The facts are we won 3 games, lost two. Hardly a classical year. I think rose tinted glasses are at play here due to the fact that we got to an Ulster final and a semi in Croker, but the point I made is correct, we lost the games that counted most. StirringIt (Cavan) - Posts: 325 - 06/03/2018 16:14:01 2082242 Now I know you have an issue with one man not with Cavan minors at all so you are either of what I said previous. When the incident happened in Croke Park Patterson and another Cavan lad were injured and Patterson was carried off on a stretcher Cavan had Kerry rolling they had no answer yes no answer and Cavan were going to win that match for I believe there was just 5 points between them at that stage with 8 minuets to go. Only for that incident I feel they were far superior and fitter. 10 minuets extra time. They lost the momentum off course for Kerry regrouped but had it been as it was just before the incident Kerry would have lost and I make no apology for saying this either. You can say they took the foot of the pedal either way they were rolling and you know that but I expect you were happy. The score let me tell you did no reflect what these minor lads put into the game. By the way Clifford scored 1-8 from play and he got far too much protection from the referee. Respect them for that they worked hard all season for. Don't belittle their efforts for they did Cavan proud as well. Just regarding the tinted glasses you have the wrong person lad I follow Cavan yes but at the end of the day I am well known for not wearing blinkers and what I say is a true reflection of what I will have seen on the day no matter what match I am watching I watch both teams on the field I also watch what management do for you can tell a lot from body language as well. Kerry took the foot of the pedal, were knocking over points when through on goal. Cavan took advantage of this and made a brief revival. Kerry were a much, much better side and if we played them 10 more times we would lose all 10. Derry were also a much better side than us ability wise. We struggled through the Galway game making a massive amount of basic errors, Galway kicked a lot of wides and we took advantage getting the result through a never say die attitude and a couple of moments of individual brilliance. Now I know you have an issue with one man not with Cavan minors at all so you are either of what I said previous Sean, you're reading too much into my comments. I have no issues with anyone on or associated with the team. I admire them for their dedication and giving up their time. The point I am making is that it was not exactly a glorious year. We have nothing from it apart from, as Jon says, a few good days out. There is a tendency to look back with rose tinted glasses because we got to an Ulster final and an AI semi. The reality is, we were never at the races in either game. As Jon says, we were lucky we got Galway on an off day shooting wise. StirringIt (Cavan) - Posts: 374 - 07/03/2018 10:36:12 2082398 Link 0 |

StirringIt (Cavan) - Posts: 326 - 07/03/2018 10:36:12 2082398 Regardless of what you say from here on in about the Cavan minors they were going to beat Kerry I have no problems saying this despite me being a Cork man and I will also say they would have beat Derry in the final there's no rose tinted glasses from this lad. Acknowledge they had Kerry on the rocks with 8 minuets to go at least? at least acknowledge this if you are a true Cavan supporter and were at the match at all. Did you not think the referee protected the so called stars of the future and the 4th official stopped our runner from entering the field of play and at no time stopped the Kerry runner strange don't you think. I will acknowledge Clifford is a good player but was in trouble until the Cavan incident. This is from a neutrals point of view but from the fact I have lived in Cavan for so long I was supporting the lads on the day. Just to clarify, we lost to Derry and we lost to Kerry - the better team won in both matches. cavanblueman (Cavan) - Posts: 636 - 08/03/2018 17:27:46 2082769 Link 0 |
Just to clarify, we lost to Derry and we lost to Kerry - the better team won in both matches. It was a brave effort though and credit where credits due, but there was no way we were going to beat Kerry, they were able to switch gears when they wanted to, and they showed what they could do in the All Ireland Final. So enough with the nonsense Sean. cavanblueman (Cavan) - Posts: 237 - 08/03/2018 17:27:46 2082769 No nonsense lad you are happy knocking your own county but all genuine people that watch the whole game could see Kerry were faltering 11 points up all of a sudden 5 up with over 8 minuets to go if not more and you say Kerry only had to change gear they DID NOT KNOW HOW TO CHANGE GEAR because they had taken it for granted the game was over and brought on new players the rock they should have perished on. Patterson's injury knocked the stuffing out of the Cavan lads remember he had just set up the previous score which was a goal and playing as we know he can. Disappointing to read a so called Cavan supporter knocking his own county. You remind me of a lot of the so called supporters that walk down the street to Clones but never walk up the hill to the pitch, same like in Dublin get to Quinns turn left watch on TV. Good night to you. The Quiet Man (Cavan) - Posts: 4601 - 08/03/2018 20:43:21 2082802 Link 0 |
You need to read my post Sean, in what sentence have I knocked my team? I gave a fair and accurate view of both matches. You see Sean, the difference between you and I is that I go to the matches.
